Countdown site for crossover project from makers of Tekken, Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, and Gundam goes live.
Corporate crossovers are all the rage lately. While Capcom has been particularly prolific in producing games with other companies (Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright), other publishers may have picked up a taste for working with the competition.
Namco Bandai has launched a Japanese teaser site for Namco Bandai x Tecmo Koei. The site is dominated by a countdown timer set to hit zero at 8 a.m. Pacific on Monday, September 5. Unfortunately, it appears gamers will have to wait until then to find out more, as the site gives no other details on the project.
The Namco Bandai x Tecmo Koei naming suggests a company-wide crossover likely pulling source material from each company's popular franchises. Namco Bandai's big franchises include Pac-Man, Tekken, Soulcalibur, Ace Combat, Ridge Racer, Klonoa, and more. For Tecmo Koei, that list is comprised of Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, Monster Rancher, Rygar, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Nobunaga's Ambition.
This would not be the first time Namco Bandai and Tecmo Koei have collaborated on a project. Since 2007, the pair have released three Dynasty Warriors Gundam titles, combining Namco Bandai's giant robot license with gameplay in the mold of Tecmo Koei's historical beat-'em-up series.
Both companies also have prior crossover experience beyond their own interactions. Namco Bandai is collaborating with Capcom on the aforementioned Street Fighter x Tekken, and working on its own counterpart in Tekken x Street Fighter. In 2005, a pre-merger Namco released the role-playing game Namco x Capcom featuring an extensive roster of both companies' characters. The publisher has also worked crossover characters like Spawn, Link, Darth Vader, and Yoda into its Soulcalibur series.
As for Tecmo Koei, it has also adapted its Dynasty Warriors series for Fist of the North Star. It is also readying another crossover created by the merger of Tecmo and Koei, as the upcoming Champion Jockey represents the combination of the two publishers' own horce racing sims, Gallop Racer and G1 Jockey.
