Serious Sam 3: BFE slips to Nov. 22
Sep 30th 2011, 23:53

If there's one thing Serious Sam isn't so serious about, it's keeping appointments. Devolver Digital and Croteam today announced the second delay for the PC version of Serious Sam 3: BFE, pushing the game's launch back to November 22.

The PC game was originally announced as a summer release and then issued what would turn out to be an equally erroneous October 18 launch date. There is still no word on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game, which were announced for summer but have not been given a new release window.

A prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter, BFE takes place in 22nd-century Egypt amid a collapsing civilization beset by unearthly beasts. The game sees the return of the series' signature adversaries like the Headless Kamikaze and Gnaar, as well as new opponents going by names like Scrapjack and Khnum.

Serious Sam 3's gameplay also features a number of additions, with Sam in particular getting an assortment of new melee moves. Additionally, up to 16 players at a time can play through the game's cooperative campaign mode.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection LE inbound
Sep 30th 2011, 22:45

Due out November 8 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection includes "optimized and rebuilt" versions of classic PlayStation 2 and PSP installments in Konami's stealth-action franchise. However, the publisher has even more in store for fans looking to relive Snake's history via a limited edition for the high-def compilation pack.

In addition to updated versions of Metal Gear Sold 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the limited edition of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will contain a 248-page art book and special packaging illustrated by lead artist Yoji Shinkawa. The standard iteration of the MGS HD Collection will retail for $50, but Konami did not note a price for the limited edition.

The HD updates pave the way for Konami's latest game-transferring initiative, which Konami vice president Hideo Kojima has dubbed "transfarring." Transfarring allows players to play through a game on both the PS3 and PSP by wirelessly transferring a save file between the two.

The first game to take advantage of this initiative will be the HD Collection version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PS3. However, Kojima hopes to expand this program by bringing the transfarring functionality to PlayStation 2 games, whereby saves would be mobile to and from the PS3 and PlayStation Vita. The final evolution of this system, according to Kojima, is to create all-new games for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita that make use of transfarring.

For more on the MGS HD Collection, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations delayed for PC - Report
Sep 30th 2011, 22:21

Pushing back the PC release for multiplatform games is becoming Ubisoft's standard operating procedure. The PC versions of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Tom Clancy's HAWX 2, Driver: San Francisco, and Call of Juarez: The Cartel all trailed their console counterparts, and the publisher might be adding one more to that list.

According to a Eurogamer report, Ubisoft's official Czech Facebook page was updated with news that the PC edition of Assassin's Creed: Revelations would hit stores on December 2, a couple of weeks after the console versions' November 15 debut. The update was apparently pulled, as the link provided by Eurogamer to the Facebook update regarding the delay points instead to a notice that the content in question is unavailable.

Specialty retailer GameStop also apparently believes the game will be pushed back, as it lists the physical and digital release dates for the PC edition of Revelations as November 29. As of press time, a Ubisoft representative had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Revelations will follow the story of Ezio, who was first introduced in Assassin's Creed II. This time out, Ezio will seek out the haunts of original Assassin's Creed protagonist Altair, visiting such Middle East strongholds as the Ottoman Empire's Constantinople. There, Ezio will once again take up arms against the Templar order.

PC | The Darkness II Q&A - Demonic Power
Sep 30th 2011, 23:25

The Darkness II, which is based on the gruesome comics produced by Top Cow Productions, drags Jackie Estacado into another nightmarish adventure alongside his malevolent cohort, The Darkness. This first-person shooter mixes its gunplay with a host of demonic powers. After catching up with publisher 2K Games' Sheldon Carter back at PAX, we tracked down producer Seth Olshfski to learn more about Jackie's tools of destruction.

Check out the powers of quad-wielding in this GameSpot exclusive trailer for The Darkness II.

GameSpot: Quad-wielding is certainly one of the most interesting parts of The Darkness II. Besides scooping up enemies and ripping off car doors, what other ways can we interact with our environment using the demon arms? What are the limits of what we can lift with demonic lift?

Seth Olshfski: Demonic lift is a talent that uses the power of The Darkness to keep enemies floating in the air when you slash upward. To use it, you need to purchase the talent and slash your enemies in an upward direction. Before you purchase demonic lift, enemies will fly up in the air and then fall back down; with demonic lift, enemies will fly up in the air where they will be suspended helplessly by the power of The Darkness for a short while before falling back to the ground.

It works great in conjunction with ground pound, which obliterates airborne enemies when you slash in a downward direction. Slash a guy up into the air and then down into the ground, and you see an explosion of entrails. I also like using demonic lift for some surgical dismemberment--lifting enemies up in the air and then ripping off a leg with the slashing demon arm or simply cutting them in half. I'm not sure why, but it's really satisfying to dismember an enemy that's helplessly floating in the air. There's just a feeling of being powerful and awesome, looking at that poor Brotherhood soldier floating helplessly in the air waiting to die.

GS: Will we be able to use ground pound to knock around cars or otherwise deform the environment?

SO: Enemies not only explode when you slash with the ground pound, but there's also a residual effect on the stuff nearby the explosion. So if you ground pound a Brotherhood rookie in the middle of a crowd, not only will you send his insides flying, but you'll also send any nearby objects or other enemies airborne.

GS: From a narrative standpoint, is The Darkling always the same character or are there multiple darklings that take turns helping Jackie? From what we've seen, The Darkling also has a real twisted sense of humor. Is that taken straight from the comics or has your team injected some of its own material into the character?

SO: That's definitely true; The Darkling has a great twisted sense of humor. He's Jackie's sidekick and has a huge role in the story. And, yes, Jackie has decided to manifest just one darkling this time around. We made that choice to focus the narrative on Jackie, but we obviously drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including the comics, to create his personality and being.

GS: In what ways can The Darkling assist you in combat? Will it be able to extinguish lights for you, for instance?

SO: The Darkling will disable enemies though a variety of combat mechanics; for instance jumping on their back and on their head. He'll pull guys out from behind cover so you can get a better shot. He picks up guns and ammo from the ground and brings them to you. As an added bonus, you can pick him up with your demon arm and throw him. He explodes on impact. He doesn't like that very much though.

GS: We've heard that there will be otherworldly locations to visit in The Darkness II. Care to give us any hints as to where those locations might be?

SO: Hints!? You want hints? Here's all you're getting: They're not in NYC.

GS: What is the top fan-requested piece of content for The Darkness II, be it a character from the comics or a specific Darkness power?

SO: There are probably two things tied for number one. The first is Mike Patton; everybody loved his voice for The Darkness from the original game. He just sounds like The Darkness should in a game of this caliber. He's part human, part beast. When he gets in the recording studio, it's really amazing. We're really glad to have him back, and the fans really appreciate it.

Tied with Patton would be requests for appearances by other characters from the Top Cow universe.

GS: In the first game, the theme of the narrative was revenge, with Jackie seeking revenge for Jenny's death. From what we've seen of The Darkness II, it looks like the theme will be survival, with Jackie being hunted by The Brotherhood. Is this accurate and will the story focus primarily on this conflict?

SO: Survival. That's a pretty good way to frame it. I think it's definitely true for the beginning of the narrative. We have a three-act structure for the game, and act one could definitely be called survival. From Jackie's perspective, somebody drove a van into your dinner; they sniped that stripper right in front of you; random dudes in orange jumpsuits are gunning for you; and some crippled dude keeps teleporting around and demanding The Darkness. Jackie definitely starts the story fighting for his life.

Act two, however, takes the story in a more proactive direction. Something (that I can't talk about now) is revealed to Jackie and he gets really [mad]. That's when he takes the fight to the enemy.

GS: Finally, is there anything else you'd like to add about the game?

SO: I can't wait for everybody to start quad-wielding. I play a lot of games, and every time I play another first-person game, I miss my demon arms. They're just really fun to use, and I think the moment-to-moment gameplay of The Darkness II will leave the fans ecstatic.

GS: Thank you for your time.

Wii | X-Men: Destiny Review
Oct 1st 2011, 00:41

What good are mutant superpowers without exciting reasons to use them? As X-Men: Destiny proves, they're no good at all. In this busted beat-'em-up, clobbering swarms of stupid bad guys with your newfound abilities is tedious, and although a constant supply of choices tries to convince you that your actions have real impact on this tumultuous world, they don't have much impact at all. Destiny does the incredible: it makes being a genetic marvel a generic bore.

Thanks for the help, Gambit and friends, but I think I got this.

It's a grim new era for the mutants. Professor X is dead, and anti-mutant sentiment is running high. You choose one of three characters, each with his or her own backstory. Whomever you choose, your mutant powers awaken when a mutant-human peace rally in San Francisco is attacked by anti-mutant thugs called purifiers. As you come to terms with your powers, you're given many choices that let you align yourself more with Cyclops and the X-Men or with Magneto and the Brotherhood. But these choices have almost no impact on the course of the game. For instance, you can make Brotherhood choices straight down the line and still end up fighting Magneto in a boss battle. Regardless of your decisions, you go through the same levels and find yourself in the same final conflict. Some games give you real choice; some create a convincing illusion of choice. X-Men: Destiny just drops a bunch of meaningless choices in your path.

And in the Wii version, sometimes those choices aren't clear. You might finish a boss battle only to be abruptly presented with an image of Cyclops and an image of Magneto and be told to "Choose Your Destiny." In the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, a preceding cutscene makes it clear exactly what this choice means, but not here. During some conversations, you see goofy comic book portraits; during others, fuzzy character models just stand in place without moving their mouths as they chat. There's some fine voice acting and the occasional decent motion comic sequence, but everything else about the way the story is presented is embarrassing.

You choose what type of power you want from three options: energy projection, shadow matter, and density control. But like the story choices you make, this decision has little real impact. You spend most of your time fighting swarms of mindless purifier thugs, and mashing the attack button is all it takes to clobber these buffoons regardless of which power you choose. As you tap the attack button to pummel bad guys with the same attacks over and over, text often appears indicating that your combo is "uncanny" or "ultimate," which is hilarious because you're doing so little. This is combat at its shallowest. Boss fights are just as bad. Most bosses can be defeated with brute force; just walk up to them and pound the attack button. A few bosses have attacks you actually need to avoid, but these bosses follow simple patterns, and once you have those patterns figured out, there's no excitement in fighting them or sense of triumph in defeating them.

As you progress, you're presented with the occasional choice of new powers to unlock. But the combat is so simple that you never feel the need to use these secondary powers, and the game performs so poorly that using them is often more trouble than it's worth. For instance, density control heroes can unlock the boulder dash power, which turns you into a large obsidian rock so that you can crush enemies. But the frame rate becomes so awful when you use this power that steering yourself into enemies on purpose is all but impossible. All you can do is roll around and hope for the best.

In addition to the powers you acquire as you progress, you find X-Genes scattered around the environments. These operate much like potions in a fantasy role-playing game: Spending a Wolverine X-Gene regenerates your health for a short time, while spending a Pyro X-Gene temporarily gives some of your attacks fire damage. This is so far removed from the way mutant powers work in the X-Men comics that it feels contrived and silly. If you collect enough of a certain character's X-Genes, you unlock his or her suit, and equipping that suit gives you unlimited use of his or her X-Gene. Acquiring Wolverine's suit lets you use his healing power as many times as you want, letting you go into battles with even less thought or regard for your safety than you might have had previously.

When you're not fighting, you make your way through the ruins of San Francisco. Traversing this environment as a superhero should be fun, but there's no joy in movement in X-Men: Destiny. The levels are restrictive areas that direct you from one location to the next, with piles of rubble and other unconvincing obstacles blocking your attempts at exploration. Shiny railings indicate things you need to climb on to progress, and the complete lack of freedom makes you feel less like a powerful mutant and more like a rat in a maze, being shuffled from one dull battle to another.

On top of it all, Destiny is an ugly game. The simple character models and muddy textures make it look like it was made several years ago. Enemies sometimes disappear into the geometry, and objects you smash vanish completely in the midst of terrible explosion effects. As if that weren't bad enough, frame rate drops frequently turn the game into a slideshow. And although it follows the same story as the 360 and PS3 versions, it doesn't even live up to the low standards they established. Combat is even shallower; certain events, like a fight against Wolverine, have been cut; and some boss fights have been simplified. You can breeze through this adventure in about five hours, but the gameplay is so shallow that you won't be left wanting more, and because your choices have so little impact, there's no compelling reason to revisit the game once you're done. In fact, it's not even absorbing the first time through. If mindless combat is all super mutants have to look forward to, you're better off letting your mutant powers remain dormant.

iPhone/iPod | NBA 2K12 iOS Hands-On Preview
Sep 30th 2011, 17:01

When you have something that is well received and popular among its core audience, it's only a matter of time before you try to branch out and hopefully appeal to an even wider audience. This is the case with 2K Sports: the company revealed that it's bringing its popular NBA 2K series to iOS. With NBA 2K12 launching on the iPod Touch and iPad alongside its console big brother, we had the opportunity to play around with it and see what mobile users can expect.

NBA 2K12 is surprisingly meaty, with a slew of different modes available. For those wanting to simply pick up and play a game, that option is available, but at the same time, those wanting to play through a regular season will have that opportunity as well. If you're the kind of gamer who doesn't care about the ups and downs of a regular season, then playing through the playoffs should satisfy those needs. Then there is Situation, a mode geared for those wanting a quick game, catered to their own preferences. Want to see how well you can erase a 10-point deficit with two minutes left in the game? With Situation, you can do that. You have control over how a game starts, and you can try to turn it around in your favor. Games can be as long or as short as you want, and the match possibilities are endless.

But that's not all 2K12 has to offer. Although this version won't feature the NBA Legends mode that's available on consoles, the Jordan Challenges from 2K11 will be included. As in that game, you'll have to complete tasks as Michael Jordan and his different Bulls teams; famous games such as The Shrug, The Flu, and even the Father's Day match against the Sonics are included. These should be quite challenging to complete, and they should keep basketball fans occupied whether they're playing on the bus on the way to work or relaxing on the sofa.

One of the most important issues approaching an iOS game is controls, and NBA 2K12 will feature two control options. The standard/classic controls use an onscreen D-pad; on the left side of the screen there will be a D-pad that can be used to move your players around the court. On the right side of the screen, depending on whether you're playing offense or defense, different onscreen options will be available. On the offensive side, you'll have pass, shoot, and even an alley-oop button, while on defense, there is change player, block, and steal attempt.

If the D-pad option isn't for you, the alternative, one-finger control option should be a fine way to play. The game will automatically control the movement of players on the court, and all you need to do is touch a respective player to pass him the ball or hold the current player to shoot. On defense, it works the same way; players will move automatically, and you have the ability to initiate steal attempts by tapping the corresponding attacking player or to block by swiping up on your own player. Surprisingly, both control options work well and can be switched during a game by adjusting them in the options menu. In some situations, you may want to have full control of your team, but other times you may feel like passively playing, and the one-finger controls let you play without having to be completely absorbed in the action on the screen.

Though the iPad is larger and has sharper visual capabilities, the iPad version is identical to the iPod Touch version in regard to features. Of course, with a larger screen, the control options are a bit friendlier on the iPad, but you can still play a mean game on your iPod Touch. Both games hit the App Store on Tuesday, October 4, with the iPad version costing $9.99 and the iPod Touch version being $4.99.

Free Portal 2 DLC out October 4
Sep 30th 2011, 20:38

Complimentary Portal 2: Peer Review add-on arriving Tuesday for PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3; new co-op test track, Challenge mode included.

Following the release of the well-received Portal 2 in April, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi said the puzzle game would receive free downloadable content over the summer. However, summer has come and gone without further word on the DLC.

Valve ended its silence today, titling the complimentary DLC "Portal 2: Peer Review" and scheduling it to arrive simultaneously on the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 next Tuesday, October 4.

The pack continues the cooperative adventures of P-Body and Atlas, who will ultimately take on GLaDOS in a new test track. The pack also includes a Challenge mode playable both in single-player and co-op, as well as leaderboard support.

Portal 2--which has shipped 2 million units--is the continuation of the 2007 Orange Box pack-in Portal. The single-player portion of the new title continues the travails of human lab rat Chell, who in the original game used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs and thwart the diabolical artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS.

For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of Portal 2.

Modern Warfare 3 tops gamer holiday wish list - Nielsen
Sep 30th 2011, 15:51

This holiday season sees the release of numerous high-profile titles, and according to tracking firm Nielsen, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the most wanted game of all.

Nielsen recently published its "Top 20 Games to Watch" and the Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games-developed shooter topped all others by a significant margin. According to Nielsen, 27 percent of respondents designated Modern Warfare 3 as one of the top five titles they intend to purchase during the 2011 holiday season.

The next two most coveted games of the season, based on Nielsen's data, are the recently released Gears of War 3 and Madden NFL 12. Both games found their way onto 19 percent of respondents' lists.

Just one title on the list--Dead Island--is a new intellectual property. All others are either sequels or extensions of existing franchises.

Other games making the list include forthcoming titles Assassin's Creed: Revelations (17 percent), Batman: Arkham City (15 percent), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (14 percent), and Battlefield 3 (12 percent).

Nielsen's online survey of what it calls "active gamers," was conducted from August 21 to September 17 of this year. Supplemental information was provided by Nielsen company NM Incite, which mined more than 417 million online conversations about the top 20 games to determine the top factors for hype.

According to NM Incite, Modern Warfare 3 conversations tended to be centered on launch parties, changes to the game, a "darker mood," and the difference between the Hardened version and its standard counterpart. Gamers excited about Assassin's Creed: Revelations are interested in the game's multiplayer component. Further, based on the firm's findings, gamers enthusiastic about Batman: Arkham City are interested in finding out which villains they will face.

Aussie emulation mash-up Sept. 30
Sep 30th 2011, 07:32

Aussie developer Nnooo unleashed its latest game onto the WiiWare store this week with EscapeVektor: Chapter 1. The premise is pretty simple: guide Vektor through a series of interconnected lines while trying not to get taken out by enemies. The game features more than 30 levels and has its own achievements system built in for those who pride themselves on digital badges.

The other big game being released on a Nintendo platform this week is The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition. Regardless of what flavour Nintendo DS console you have, if you can access the DSiWare store in it, then you can download the game for free! Four Swords was the first game in the Zelda franchise to feature multiplayer support, and this rerelease has been upgraded so that it's playable over Wi-Fi. Be sure to check out our original review of the game for more information.

Both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network Store share Mercury HG this week, which is a little puzzler that sees players navigating a blob through a series of mazes. The Mercury series started off life as a PSP franchise but has since been released for the Wii and now on high-def consoles as well.

Mercury HG is about where the similarities end, with Worms Ultimate Mayhem being released on XBLA, and the PSN updating with Rochard, Elemental Monster, and a few other indie games.

In addition to updated versions of Metal Gear Sold 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the limited edition of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will contain a 248-page artbook, and special packaging illustrated by lead artist Yoji Shinkawa.

Xbox 360 | Batman: Arkham City Updated Hands-On Preview - Going After the Joker
Sep 30th 2011, 14:00

Batman: Arkham City is the upcoming sequel to 2009's outstanding action-adventure game Batman: Arkham Asylum. The second game also features appearances by many more members of the caped crusader's iconic rogues gallery, including Catwoman, Two-Face, and Mr. Freeze (among others), along with Batman's archnemesis, the Joker, and his girl Friday, Harley Quinn. And for one, brief, shining moment, the Xbox 360 version of the game was in our hands at a recent press event, and we had the opportunity to play through a never-before-seen segment of the game that takes place shortly after the events we discussed in our time at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Here's our updated report. Spoiler warning: This story does contain minor plot spoilers. Proceed with caution.

Re-acquaint yourself with the clown prince of crime and his associate, Mr. Hammer, in this video trailer.

This time around, we played through a segment of the game that takes place about three hours in--just after the events in the E3 demo, which, to recap, involved Batman's enemy and occasional girlfriend Catwoman being captured by Two-Face; Batman rescuing her; Catwoman being narrowly missed by a shot from sniper rifle seemingly wielded by the Joker; Batman tracking the origin of the fired shot to a bell tower that ends up being a trap that was rigged with explosives; Batman narrowly escaping the explosion; then Batman tracing the origin of the explosives to the city's abandoned steel mill. Our session started here, with Batman on the rooftops of the city on his way to the mill, occasionally turning on his comlink to discuss his current list of clues on the Joker's location with his trusted advisor and butler, Alfred.

We were short on time, so we immediately set out to find the Joker's location by following a tracking beacon that clearly indicated our relative distance, and whether we were going in the right location. And since we were playing as the Batman, we traveled in style by using our controller's right bumper to grapple onto rooftops, pulling ourselves up, and swinging and gliding our way across the city. As we've mentioned previously, Batman has a new trick up his sleeve that you perform simply by double-tapping the action button (A for the Xbox 360) that lets him perform an extra upward leap just as his grapple is yanking him along. The leap carries him further forward and upward and gives him an extra momentum boost that's perfect for turning tiny, unforgiving ledges into jumping points to help you glide farther and faster.

We poked around the city for a bit, finding a few pockets of the Joker's thugs to fight, and even encountering Bane, the supervillain whose use of the titan chemical formula has turned him into a massive juggernaut. Apparently, Bane isn't hunting for bat this time around. He suggests that he's investigating a shipment of the titan serum that managed to escape the asylum after the events of the previous game, and wishes only to find and destroy the remaining 12 samples to minimize the spread of the deadly substance. Batman strikes an uneasy truce with the giant--this unlocks a side-quest that helpfully pulls up the location of six of the vials for him to track down while Bane goes after the rest.

However, we skipped the side-quest to go after the Joker, leaping and gliding across the city to eventually scale our way to the gigantic smokestack of the abandoned steel mill, then leap headfirst into it. While we were able to safely enter the mill's furnace without alerting any guards, the abandoned furnace room itself overflowed with molten steel, and required us to deftly hop along collapsed railings. Once we got through, we found ourselves sneaking through the grates underneath an atrium area in which a civilian doctor was being held by the Joker's thugs and the always exuberant Harley Quinn. In Arkham Asylum, the Joker isn't feeling very well, probably because of that massive overdose of titan serum he took at the end of Arkham Asylum--so as it turns out, Harley is doing her best to kidnap medical personnel to attend to the sickly supervillain. We arrived just in time to dramatically leap out of the floor grate to save the good doctor and practice our fisticuffs--and Arkham City's heavy duty hand-to-hand combat appears to be just as satisfying as ever. After beating down these thugs using the game's simple melee system, which still lets you press the counter button (in this case, Y on the Xbox 360 controller) to intercept incoming attacks and turn them into skull-cracking takedowns.

We rescued the doctor and holed her up in a locked stock room which contained one of the game's new gadgets, the remote electrical charge--essentially, a high-voltage stun gun that the dark knight can use to either subdue enemies or charge up damaged machinery to make progress. We couldn't wait to put this new toy to use, and after trekking through more of the ruins of Arkham City (including a high-ceilinged, conveniently gargoyle-filled chamber that just happened to be guarded by thugs--a great opportunity to revisit the classic Arkham Asylum stealth gameplay of silently grappling up to the gargoyles before using a spectacular diving kick to take down our foes, one by one), we found a very important use for this new toy.

Up ahead lay a heavy machinery site with a powerful electromagnet. In order to make progress, we had to use the REC to positively attract a dangling steel girder, then negatively repel it so that it would swing back and forth on its chain, eventually smashing through the wall of second-story office to which Harley Quinn had escaped. After breaking open the bricks, we used our grappling gun to ascend, but were quickly kicked out by Mr. Hammer, a huge, one-armed thug wearing clown makeup and wielding an enormous sledgehammer. We were forced to defend ourselves against this new threat and a small group of other thugs, and as it turned out, Mr. Hammer was able to easily brush off our early attacks. However, zapping him with the REC caused him to briefly lose control of his own body and spin around in crazy circles--knocking down other thugs with his sledgehammer. Once we figured out his weakness, we made short work of our foes and again ascended to the office to apprehend the Joker, once and for all.

We were met by a strangely shaken Harley, who accused us of ultimately being to blame for what had happened. And a moment later, we came to realize what happened as an in-game cutscene played, showing the Joker's motionless body lay slumped in a chair, connected to an intravenous drip that had apparently failed to save him, because according to Batman's detective vision, the Joker's body was lifeless. The clown prince of crime had apparently died. But the Joker has always somehow avoided death, and Batman himself vowed years ago to never take a life--so how could this have come to pass? Rocksteady and Warner Brothers Interactive remained tight-lipped about how this had happened or what it means for the story, but it's clear that many, many changes are afoot for the Batman in his next adventure. Given that Arkham City has even more bone-crunching fistfights, high-tech gadgets, and crazy plot twists, we can't wait to play the game. Fortunately, it'll be here soon--next month, in fact, on the Xbox 360, the PS3, and the PC.
