Ubisoft building F2P Castle Empire
8 Jul 2011, 11:00 pm

Between Might & Magic: Heroes Kingdoms, Trackmania Nations Forever, and Ghost Recon Online, Ubisoft has already established itself in the free-to-play online game market. However, it appears the publisher has another free-to-play game in store for players called Castle Empire.

Though Ubisoft has not formally announced the game, it does have an official website up and running. The site offers some details on the game, saying it will be free-to-play and does not require a download.

Additionally, the game's listed bullet points paint it as a strategy title, where players must manage resources, battle enemies, and conquer new lands. The website also shows off some of the game's first screenshots and notes that players can connect with other players in-game.

Castle Empire is currently in development at Blue Byte, the German shop responsible for the Settlers titles and Anno 1404. Unfortunately, further specifics concerning the game are not available, and as of press time Ubisoft had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

However, gamers eager to learn more about the title can sign up to participate in the forthcoming closed beta for Castle Empire via the game's website.

Witcher 2 studio sued by Namco Bandai
8 Jul 2011, 9:34 pm

Last month, Witcher 2 developer CD Projekt Red took a victory lap of sorts, announcing that its PC role-playing game sold through 400,000 copies and would soon be receiving an Xbox 360 port. That celebratory mood may have since faded, as a CD Projekt representative confirmed for GameSpot today that the developer is being sued by the game's European distributor, Namco Bandai.

According to a report on Dark Side of Gaming, Namco Bandai is accusing CD Projekt of breaking its contractual obligations with the publisher twice over.

The first violation allegedly occurred when the developer released a downloadable version of the game free of digital rights management through its own online storefront, Good Old Games. The second breach was said to have occurred when CD Projekt signed a distribution deal with THQ to bring the game out in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

Beyond confirming the existence of the suit, the CD Projekt representative could not comment on the case. A Namco Bandai representative was also unable to comment.

The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to CD Projekt's original and picks back up with professional monster slayer Geralt following a failed assassination of Temerian royalty. Geralt then sets out on a quest to track down the king's attempted killers, while also continuing to pursue those responsible for murdering other witchers.

Uncharted 3 beta attracts 1 million
8 Jul 2011, 11:42 pm

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception isn't due to ship until November, but it's already proving mighty popular for its developer, Naughty Dog. The California shop today shared news that the game's multiplayer beta has attracted 1 million players since going public on Monday.

The beta for Uncharted 3 began on June 28, but at that time it was available only to PlayStation Plus subscribers and those who purchased new copies of Infamous 2.

According to Sony, the beta passed the million mark Tuesday, one day after the trial was opened up to the public.

The beta for Uncharted 3 ends on July 14, but Naughty Dog is not finished offering gamers new content. The beta will add a new map--Yemen--as well as a new game type called Co-Op Adventure this Sunday.

Additionally, gamers who have met the designated play requirements will be able to earn rewards for the retail version of the game. These include in-game cash, an Uncharted 3 PSN Beta Tester Avatar, and the Treasure Hunter's Starter Pack.

GameSpot's News: Kojima, Suda-51 team up for Sdatcher radio drama

Kojima, Suda-51 team up for Sdatcher radio drama
8 Jul 2011, 11:56 pm

Suda 51 and Hideo Kojima have been talking about collaborating for five years. The first concrete project to feature the pair of star designers has finally come to light, as Famitsu reports that Kojima today announced Sdatcher.

Pronounced "Su Datcher," the project is a radio drama inspired by Kojima's 1988 adventure game Snatcher (eventually released in the US on Sega CD in 1994). The tweak on the name is a nod to No More Heroes director Suda, who will write the story. Kojima will direct the show, with Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka providing the music and Yoshio Kasatoshi working on character designs and illustrations (though it's unclear what illustrations a radio drama would require).

While Suda and Kojima have not previously teamed up on a game, Suda and Yamaoka are coming off their own critically acclaimed collaboration with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, Shadows of the Damned.

It's not clear when Sdatcher will premiere, or who will be used as the show's voice cast. Kojima did say it should be enjoyable to newcomers as well as those familiar with the original Snatcher. The project has been in the works for some time, originally being talked about in 2007 under the code name "Project S."

GameSpot's News: Katamari Damacy creator working on Glitch

Katamari Damacy creator working on Glitch
8 Jul 2011, 10:41 pm

Last year, Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi left Namco Bandai after more than a decade. He gave no indication where he would be headed after parting ways with his previous publisher, but the developer's next home was revealed today in a post on the blog of his new employer.

In a blog post for the free-to-play massively multiplayer online game Glitch, Tiny Speck cofounder Stewart Butterfield revealed that Takahashi had recently moved from Tokyo to work on the title. Butterfield said he met Takahashi through That Game Company's Robin Hunicke several months ago and said the meeting was instantly like talking with an old friend.

"We played some Glitch together, batted ideas back and forth, and found that we shared the same values: deep beliefs in curiosity, humor, absurdity, and above all a belief in the positive power of play," Butterfield said.

Citing Takahashi as a hero to everyone on the Glitch team, Butterfield said he was saddened to hear the creator was considering leaving the game industry entirely. In the wake of the original Katamari Damacy, he questioned the need for games, saying, "Children would be better off playing outside." Two years later, he confessed to being sick of the Katamari series and said he wasn't having much fun in the game industry anymore.

The browser-based Glitch is a nonviolent game set in the minds of 11 giants. Players must work together to learn new skills and build their shared, persistent world. Although the game is free-to-play with in-game items for sale, it will also have premium accounts tied to a subscription fee. The game is currently in beta testing.

PlayStation 3 entering Limbo July 19
8 Jul 2011, 8:00 pm

Playdead's award-winning sidescroller Limbo was awarded critical plaudits for its thoughtful puzzles and striking aesthetics when it released a year ago this month only on Xbox Live. Now--as was expected--PlayStation 3 gamers will finally be able to try it out in just two weeks.

Playdead co-founder Dino Patti wrote on the PlayStation Blog today that Limbo will arrive for the PS3 on July 19, with a European release date pegged for July 20. The game is expected in Japan and the rest of Asia "soon."

Additionally, Limbo's soundtrack will be made available to purchase through iTunes next Monday, July 11. A PC version of the game has been confirmed, but Playdead has yet to announce when it will arrive.

[UPDATE] According to Limbo's official website, the game will arrive on PC through Steam on August 2 worldwide.

Limbo is a puzzle-platformer that has players controlling a silhouette of a boy searching for his sister throughout various dreary chapters and dark environments. The game doesn't have loading screens once it is started and progresses through reaching various checkpoints.

Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Box scaring Japan
8 Jul 2011, 7:39 pm

The Resident Evil series is celebrating its 15th birthday this year, and publisher Capcom is throwing the horror-action franchise a birthday bash with a new Japanese bundle that packs in most of its biggest games.

The Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Box (as translated by Andriasang) will include three original PlayStation Resident Evil games, high-definition remastered iterations of Resident Evil 4 and Code: Veronica along with their soundtracks, pins, and stickers.

The PlayStation-era Resident Evil games included in the Anniversary Box are Resident Evil Director's Cut, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Last Escape. According to the translation, the boxed collection will also include an extra space for gamers to fill with their copy of Resident Evil 5, in order to complete the set.

The pack will be available exclusively through the publisher's e-Capcom store in Japan on September 8. There was no mention of a North America debut for the 15th Anniversary Box.

GameSpot's News: PlanetSide 2 revealed

PlanetSide 2 revealed
8 Jul 2011, 5:00 pm

Sony Online Entertainment has revealed PlanetSide 2, the sequel to 2003's massively multiplayer online shooter PlanetSide, at its Fan Faire event in Las Vegas. Creative director Matt Higby shared a few new details on the sequel with GameSpot, suggesting that the sequel will be "unrivaled in terms of scope and scale." The new game will be built with the Forgelight Engine, an entirely new technology suite created by Sony Online, though it will also apparently use Nvidia's PhysX software for such things as more-realistic flight modeling, cover from incoming fire, and certain special effects.

Higby explained that the sequel will be a "re-imagining" of the original game, which chronicled a futuristic conflict on the embattled planet of Auraxis between three different factions: the Terran Republic, the New Conglomerate, and the Vanu Sovereignty. Players would advance through various battle ranking levels while acquiring equipment certifications for both different weapon types and different classes of vehicles.

"Those familiar with the original PlanetSide will be able to see the similarities," said the creative director. However, he noted the sequel will have "a quicker, modern pace" and "visual effects you'd expect from today's triple-A first-person shooters."

Higby went on to note the sequel will include a stronger emphasis on territorial control. By controlling territory, PlanetSide 2's factions will automatically receive "resources" (though players will also be able to earn resources for their faction by also successfully attacking or defending enemy emplacements). Resources can be used to get shortcuts to advance through certification trees (effectively getting faster access to higher-level weapon and vehicle skills), or to upgrade weapons or vehicles with additional improvements that can be added to upgrade slots.

The certification system itself will also be revamped. The sequel will use a timed unlock system not unlike that of EVE Online, in that new certifications can be immediately installed but will gradually be trained over time, even when players aren't logged in. As a result, those who have less time to devote to the game will still be able to keep up with their certifications.

Sony Online also intends to further differentiate the sequel's factions by making each one "much more distinct," though the team is paying considerable attention to helping differentiate different player classes. Although PlanetSide 2 will allow for the seamless class changes seen in other modern-day shooters like the Battlefield series, the class system is intended to help players take specific roles within a squad, such as a medic, an air pilot, or a heavy-duty MAX armor suit. In fact, the sequel will not only include a separate certification tree for squad leader characters, it will also sport a new specialization tree for outfits (PlanetSide's version of persistent player guildes), so that like-minded players can form an air cavalry division or a tank division if they choose.

The creative director explained that a great deal of time and thinking has gone into devising PlanetSide 2's pace to make sure that it has the "higher lethality and quicker combat" of a modern shooter while still staying true to the PlanetSide universe. Higby confirmed that the base defense battles of the original game will definitely be making a comeback, though the game will have more ways to concentrate the action in a single location. For instance, the sequel will have new respawn options, such as a limited spawn-on-squad functionality that will, under certain circumstances, let players immediately return to battle at the location of their squadmates, rather than have to walk all the way back from the base.

PlanetSide 2 will also have an enhanced mission system that will not only offer Sony Online-created tasks to keep players busy, but will also let high-level outfit leaders craft their own missions to drop into and around current battle hotspots to incentivize players to converge on the area. In addition, there won't be a solitary "sanctuary" home base as a fallback anymore--instead, each of the three factions will have a base on all three major continents that cannot be captured. The developer is also leaving out slow-to-respawn HART shuttles that left players waiting. As a result, each faction will always have a foothold on any other continent, which means less transit time to and from the action.

While Sony Online revealed the first details on the game at its Las Vegas community event, the publisher isn't talking specific dates either for a launch or for a beta. Expect more details on the sequel's various gameplay systems in the coming months.

Modern Warfare 3 spots color blind option
8 Jul 2011, 5:34 pm

Though Treyarch and Infinity Ward have both produced blockbuster entries in the Call of Duty franchise, the two studios don't always include each other's added features, like Treyarch's zombie modes. However, one big addition in Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops will find its way into the Infinity Ward-Sledgehammer-developed Modern Warfare 3: options to assist color blind players.

According to a recent blog entry at Sledgehammer Games' website, the developer is bringing a "Color Blind Assist" option to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This mode was first introduced in last November's best-selling Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the successor to the well-received Call of Duty: Black Ops. Set to launch on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 November 8, Modern Warfare 3 will be the first Call of Duty to support Call of Duty: Elite, the online social service Activision announced in May. Elite opens up in beta form on July 14, at which time it will be compatible with Call of Duty: Black Ops in a limited fashion.

The program's full feature set will be announced at Activision's first-ever Call of Duty XP convention, which is slated for September 2 and 3 in Los Angeles.

GameSpot's News: 3DS launch lineup prep was 'lacking' - Iwata

3DS launch lineup prep was 'lacking' - Iwata
8 Jul 2011, 6:55 pm

At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo senior managing director Shigeru Miyamoto acknowledged struggles with the 3DS launch lineup, saying developers had a short window of time to work on the system's initial titles. The sentiment was expanded on by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata this week in a Nintendo shareholder meeting in response to an investor question.

Iwata acknowledged the difficulty in recovering after a slow start at retail or changing a widely held perception once it's been established, conceding that Nintendo's preparation was "lacking" in regards to the 3DS key launch library. In particular, Iwata said the company would have fared better if it had produced more games to make the system a must-have for consumers right away.

"We also must reflect on the fact that we were not able to launch Nintendo 3DS at a time when a sufficient number of strong software titles were ready," Iwata said. "In order to avoid the same thing from happening to the Wii U, we are considering details, such as what software is suitable for the launch, more carefully than ever before."

Another investor told Iwata he viewed games as a waste of time, and said Nintendo needs to introduce value-added features to the 3DS for parents and others like him. Specifically, he suggested mobile phone functionality.

"If we had never considered combining a mobile phone and a handheld device, we would be negligent," Iwata said, "but on the other hand, mobile phones are subject to monthly fees and we need to consider how well this would fit with game devices or how we should balance these aspects. Adding to this, mobile phone companies are generally divided by countries and when running a business on a worldwide basis, we need to consider in what conditions can we partner up with mobile phone companies around the world. Please understand that we are still researching these areas."

A hypothetical Nintendo entry into the mobile phone market has been a hot topic in the wake of The Pokemon Company's confirmation of an official app for iOS and Android devices. However, earlier this week,Nintendo spokesperson Yasuhiro Minagawa ruled out the possibility of the company producing games for Apple's iOS or other hardware maker's platforms. But since the gaming giant only owns a minority stake in The Pokemon Company, it can't prevent Pikachu and friends from going mobile.

Big In Japan June 27- July 3: Tales of the Abyss 3DS
8 Jul 2011, 5:58 am

Update: GoldenEye 007 is published by Nintendo, not Ubisoft. That error has been corrected. GameSpot apologizes for the confusion.

While the 3DS version of Tales of the Abyss will be localized in English sometime this year, the Japanese version seems to be doing well; so much so that it's on the top spot of the recent update of Media Creates' sales chart. The RPG from Namco Bandai sold 74,173 copies on the week of June 27 through July 3. Tales of the Abyss is the eighth mothership title in the Tales series which introduces the Flex Range Linear Motion Battle system that allows freedom in movement and running across 3D space during combat.

Occupying second place is the PS3 version of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. This version of the game sold 54,924 on its debut week, while the Xbox 360 version is in 12th place with 12,326 units sold. The second update to the fighting game introduces four new playable characters and a rebalanced character roster. The former king of the charts last week, Meruru no Atelier: Alchemist no Renkinjutsushi 3, is now at seventh place with 23,756 units sold. The 3DS version of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still staying strong in the top ten, residing at sixth place with 24,190 units sold.

New to Japan is Test Drive Unlimited 2, the racing game that came out on March outside of the region. The PS3 version sold 15,254 units and resides in 10th place, while the Xbox 360 sold 7,765 units and is at 19th place. The Wii version of GoldenEye 007 also made its debut on the charts; the game is in fourth place with 36,174 units sold. Also interesting to note is the position drop of Ryu Ga Gotoku: Of the End, with the title now at 14th place with 11,867 units sold.

Over at the hardware side, the 3DS now takes the top slot thanks in huge part to the portable debut of Namco Bandai's RPG. The 3DS sold 30,233, barely beating the PSP and its unit sales count of 29,871. Otherwise, the hardware positions are about the same as last week's charts.

Aussie emulation mash-up June 8, 2011
8 Jul 2011, 7:49 am

The Australian winter probably means you want to stay indoors, so thankfully you don't even need to leave the house these days to get new games thanks to downloadable platforms. The PlayStation Network Store takes the lead this week with the most releases, ranging from new titles to old PlayStation classics. The biggest new release comes from Sony Computer Entertainment America and is essentially a modern-day take on the classic arcade game, Rampage. Appropriately titled Eat Them!, the game sees players creating their own monsters before stomping around (and on) an open city. On top of the standard mode, you can join up with a friend for some co-op destruction, or play for high scores in Challenge mode.

Other titles that released on the PlayStation Network this week include Sega Rally Online Arcade, which was previously released on Xbox Live Arcade during the PSN outage, Alien Zombie Megadeath, Gex: Deep Cover Gecko, and Cohort Chess.

On Xbox Live Arcade there's Deadliest Warrior: Legends, a follow up to the last year's fighting game based-off of the popular TV show of the same name. The game retains its core fighting mechanic, with the focus this time around being on famous fighters like William Wallace and Genghis Khan.

If you prefer to direct the fighting from afar then perhaps the second big XBLA title for the week, Dead Block, is the game for you. This one blends genres a bit, but essentially it's a tower defence game that's played out from a third-person perspective. You get to choose one of three characters and run around the map setting up traps for the zombies to unwittingly walk through.

Finally its time to look at Nintendo, which is suffering from another quiet week across its multiple digital storefronts. On 3DS Virtual Console punters can pick up Qix, while Dragon's Lair makes its way onto yet another platform, this time releasing on DSiWare.

For the full list of games out this week, check out the list below:

PlayStation Network:
Eat Them! - A$12.95
Sega Rally Online Arcade - A$12.95
Alien Zombie MegaDeath - A$10.95
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 - A$29.95
Gex: Deep Cover Gecko A$15.95
Cohort Dress - A$4.25

Xbox Live Arcade:
Dead Block - 800 Microsoft Points
Deadliest Warrior: Legends - 800 Microsoft Points

3DS Virtual Console:
Qix - A$4.50

DSiWare:
Dragon's Lair - A$12.00

Nintendo Store Update: Qix hits 3DS
8 Jul 2011, 1:01 am

July is an exceptionally light month at retail for the 3DS, with Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions (July 26) the only boxed game expected to launch for the system. It's already considerably busier on the downloadable front, as Nintendo's first weekly update for its digital storefront includes two new Game Boy Virtual Console titles and four more eShop/DSiWare originals for the handheld.

The Virtual Console debut of the 1990 Game Boy puzzler Qix leads the way with a $3 asking price. The game puts players in control of a tiny line-drawing spark on a blank playfield, and requires them to box off 75 percent of the screen to pass each level. The ostensibly simple task is complicated by a number of dangerous sparks that cruise around the playfield outline, threatening to destroy any in-progress boxes. Qix also includes a multiplayer mode.

The 3DS gets a second retro release this week in the form of Jaleco's 1991 action game Fortified Zone. The shooter lets players switch between two characters as they storm a four-level fortress to destroy the secret weapon of an enemy force. Fortified Zone is available now for $4.

As for the quartet of new releases playable on either the DSi or the 3DS, they are headlined by the cascading gem puzzle game Jewel Keepers: Easter Island and Agetec's graffiti-themed side-scrolling platformer Roller Angels, which sees a trio of heroines restore a world sapped of color by alien invaders. Rounding out the selection of new releases is Make Up & Style, which lets players use the stylus to apply cosmetics to 3D models, and Alawar Entertainment's arcade-style sim game Farm Frenzy. All four of the DSiWare/eShop titles sell for $5, or 500 DSi points.

The final new game in Nintendo's weekly round-up is Just Jam, a new music game available on WiiWare. Billed as a creation tool, Just Jam lets players use the Wii Remote to cue up guitars, drum beats, sound effects, and vocals in 16 different tracks. Just Jam is available for 800 Wii points ($8).
