Vindictus Episode 8 Part 1: 'Not Even if You Kill Us All' Update Now Live
Jul 17th 2011, 04:58

New perils and challenges in the land of Vindictus are now available with this week's Episode 8, part 1 content update, which ushers in two new raid bosses, several new dungeons, in game events and more. Last month, the mighty Karok joined the ranks of the brave and noble mercenaries battling the forces of evil in the land, helping make Vindictus more exciting than ever. Mercenaries of all fighting styles will now need to band together to face the latest threats in the world.

Presently, rumors are brewing of a rebellion at Ortel Castle. It is up to the bravest mercenaries to investigate and find out the truth. Elsewhere in the land, four new stories and battle quests have been added. These dungeons were designed to assist mercenaries through difficult leveling areas, and include: Red Ruins, Remnants, Depths of Ainle and Burnt Pumpkin Field.

UI improvements

Today's content update includes several UI improvements, specifically to the inventory window. Advanced sorting options are now available: "Sort" and "Sort All" buttons can be found at the bottom of the Inventory UI. Mercenaries can now create a custom label for their inventory tabs, as well as set the desired item type for sorting (Normal, Equipment, Consumables, Material, Story, and Miscellaneous items), making keeping track of your gear easier than ever.

Double Expertise Events

As an added incentive to explore the influx of new content this summer, every day from today through July 26th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  PT, all players will benefit from a double expertise and experience rate gain.

Blessing Stones

Mercenaries looking to give their dungeon runs a boost can now purchase powerful bonuses in the form of Blessing Stones from the Supply Depot. A variety of Blessing Stones will grant an entire party bonus Exp, AP, Luck or even all three. Before mercenaries launch a boat, party members will have the option to use a Blessing Stone, which last for the duration of the dungeon. Starting today through July 19, mercenaries can receive free Blessing Stones simply by completing the quests related to the new dungeons.

Activision files complaint over ModernWarfare3.com - Report
Jul 16th 2011, 20:24

Modern Warfare 3 isn't supposed to kick off until November, but a dispute over a website devoted to the game is already flaring up. According to a report on domain-tracking blog Fusible, Activision is looking to sieze ownership of ModernWarfare3.com through a complaint filed with the National Arbitration Forum.

Originally registered in March 2009, ModernWarfare3.com bills itself both as "a 100 percent unofficial fan site dedicated to the Modern Warfare series," as well as "a parody of Modern Warfare 3." While the site has for some time openly criticized the Activision shooter as a retread of the series, it drew particular attention recently when it temporarily forwarded all ModernWarfare3.com traffic to the official website of Electronic Arts' competing military shooter Battlefield 3. In its complaint, Activision described the forwarding as retaliation for a take-down notice it sent related to copyrighted content that had previously appeared on the site.

For Activision to win ownership of the site, it would have to show that ModernWarfare3.com is "identical or confusingly similar to" its own trademarks related to the series, that the operator of the site has no legitimate interests for use of the domain name, and it was registered and used in bad faith. The complaint indicates the ModernWarfare3.com owner would be able to retain the name if "making a legitimate noncommercial or fair use of the domain name, without intent for commercial gain to misleadingly divert consumers or tarnish the trademark."

However, Activision is arguing that ModernWarfare3.com ran ads for GameStop and Best Buy, making it a commercial venture, and that the forwarding to a direct competitor's website is sufficient to show the site was run in bad faith. At the moment, the site no longer directs to Battlefield 3's site, and appears to be free of advertising.

In establishing its own claim to the brand, Activision's complaint noted that the publisher has spent more than $24 million in the US alone on marketing the Modern Warfare installments of the Call of Duty series. As of press time, neither Activision nor the admin of ModernWarfare3.com had returned GameSpot's request for comment.

Shadows of the Damned, Child of Eden come up short in June - Report
15 Jul 2011, 9:35 pm

Grasshopper's action thriller said to have sold just 24,000 last month, Q Entertainment's psychedelic shooter pegged at 34,000 copies.

June proved to be a fairly depressed month at retail, thanks in no small part to continued weakness in US software sales. Total software sales at US retail according to the NPD Group were down 10 percent to $508.9 million for the month, with May's top release, L.A. Noire, continuing its hold on the top of NPD's chart.

The month proved to be especially bad for two of the more stylish games released during June. Joystiq reports that it has received word from NPD that the EA Partners-published Shadows of the Damned sold just 24,000 units across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in June. Q Entertainment's latest rhythm game, Child of Eden, also reportedly fared quite poorly, selling just 34,000 units.

Receiving top marks from critics, Shadows of the Damned is an action thriller from Grasshopper Manufacture that boasted collaboration between No More Heroes creator Suda-51, Resident Evil architect Shinji Mikami, and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. The game tells the story of Garcia Hotspur, who goes on a trip to hell to save his true love, Paula.

The Kinect-enabled Child of Eden also featured big-name appeal, with Tetsuya Mizuguchi leading development on the project. The game takes its cues in large part from Mizuguchi's acclaimed rhythm shooter Rez and features the same style of music-enhanced shooter gameplay with psychedelic visuals. A PS3 version of the game is also planned.

EA, Ubisoft, and NPD had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the sales figures as of press time.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming to Comic-Con?
15 Jul 2011, 10:53 pm

After teasing "future plans" for crossover fighter, publisher said to be rereleasing game with 12 new characters, $40 price.

Source: Comic book and nerd-culture enthusiast site The Quarter Bin.

What we heard: It's pretty clear that Capcom has something up its sleeve for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at Comic-Con 2011. Both Capcom and Marvel will be hosting panel discussions at the event, and producer Ryota Niitsuma is scheduled to be on hand to deliver "fantastic news" about "future plans" for the crossover fighter. Now, it appears as if the companies' big announcement will be a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 redux, complete with an expanded roster and budget price point.

The Quarter Bin reports that Marvel and Capcom will announce Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at next week's San Diego event. A rerelease akin to Super Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will reportedly include 12 additional characters on-disc, two of which will be the previously available downloadable fighters Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath. The original MVC3 included 38 playable characters on-disc.

Despite the added content, Capcom is apparently lowering the price for the game's rerelease. The Quarter Bin indicates that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will carry a $39.99 sticker tag, a move that falls in line with SSFIV's discount rate.

The official story: Capcom had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus: Looking not bogus. Capcom has a long tradition of rereleasing its fighting games with gameplay tweaks and expanded content, to substantial success. Expect more information at Capcom's Comic-Con panel, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23. Marvel's talk will follow shortly thereafter at 12:30 p.m.

Ex-DJ Hero devs heading up mobile shop - Report
15 Jul 2011, 11:17 pm

Former FreeStyle Games staffers Chris Lee and Ofei Sakyi leading new tune-themed studio Music in Colour; first game due out July 20 on iOS devices.

When Activision announced it was discontinuing the DJ Hero franchise in February, the fate of developer FreeStyle Games was left in limbo. Today, The Guardian has word on the fate of at least two of those developers, reporting that ex-FreeStyle Games employees Chris Lee and Ofei Sakyi have formed Music in Colour. The new company doubles as a music label and mobile game developer, and its first project, Say What?!, is slated for release for iOS devices on July 20.

Music in Colour is being commissioned as a joint venture by 8linQ, a UK-based publisher that claims it is "changing the way people consume music." According to the report, other partners in the process include UK-based production music company Reactify and recording studio Metropolis Group. Additionally, the group has tapped Sony Music Entertainment for a licensing deal and will make available additional songs via an in-game store for £1.19 ($1.70) each.

Say What?! has reportedly been in development for "several months" and includes songs from Calvin Harris, Scouting for Girls, the Zutons, and the Nolans. As for the game, Say What?! has players tapping lyric cues to songs as they float by onscreen.

Silicon Knights picks up Canadian gov't funding
16 Jul 2011, 12:30 am

The Canadian government is generous with its tax subsidies and grants for the game industry, and a welcome recipient has been St. Catherine's, Ontario-based Silicon Knights. This week, Ontario's Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced that the Too Human developer has been granted funds to dramatically expand its operations with the creation of 80 new jobs.

The Ontario ministry did not expound on the particulars of its grant to Silicon Knights. However, it did note that in addition to creating the new jobs, the money would help "protect 97 existing positions" at the studio.

Led by polemic game creator Dennis Dyack, Silicon Knights is known for its work on Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. After working exclusively with Nintendo during the late '90s and early 2000s, Silicon Knights signed on with Microsoft Studios to create the Too Human trilogy for the Xbox 360.

Silicon Knights is currently working with Activision to release X-Men: Destiny for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS this fall. The studio has also expressed interest in returning to the Too Human trilogy, despite the first game's lackluster critical and commercial reception. Additionally, as part of a separate Canadian grant from 2009, the studio said that it was at work on a project titled "Siren in the Maelstrom."

Uncharted 3 beta the biggest yet on PS3
16 Jul 2011, 1:12 am

Sony pulled the plug on the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta today, and set about tallying up the data collected since it launched late last month. According to the PS3 maker, the beta was the largest test period the system has ever seen, with 1.53 million players involved.

In 362 cumulative years of match time, Uncharted 3 beta testers fired 48 billion shots, killing each other a total of 1.9 billion times, which works out to an average of 1,200 kills per player. Sony tossed out a couple more stats, saying testers completed 22 million matches, racking up $1.9 trillion in in-game cash.

When it arrives on November 1, Uncharted 3 will focus on protagonist Drake's search for a lost city, with the wily adventurer finding his way to the Arabian Peninsula and its bleak Empty Quarter. In addition to the new multiplayer overhauls, the game will feature stereoscopic 3D capability, new stealth and melee maneuvers, and more. The game will debut alongside the first novel based on the series, Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth.

Vita 'might be too late' - Crytek CEO
15 Jul 2011, 5:38 pm

Cevat Yerli expects Sony's next handheld to have a hard time carving out its market against tablets, mobile devices, and the 3DS.

The PlayStation Vita may be Sony's next-generation handheld, but one developer wonders if the upcoming portable system is already behind the times. In a newly published interview with Develop, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli expressed appreciation for Sony and the PS Vita, as well as skepticism about their commercial prospects.

"The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform, but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late," Yerli said. "I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets. There's also the 3DS investing in this market."

Yerli went on to say the winners in the portable market would be determined partly by content, but also by "the platform's ability to receive the content."

While Yerli characterizes his relationship with Sony positively, it isn't very old. The March launch of Crysis 2 marked Crytek's first excursion on a Sony platform for the previously PC-exclusive developer. While rumors spread last month that the studio intended to finish up the multiplatform TimeSplitters 4--which was in development at Free Radical when Crytek acquired the company--Crytek has no officially announced projects on the way for PlayStation 3 or Vita.

Ubisoft confirms Uplay Passport online program
15 Jul 2011, 6:14 pm

Yesterday, it was rumored that Ubisoft would join major publishers Sony, THQ, Warner Bros., and Electronic Arts in offering an online pass for its games called the Uplay Passport. Today, the French publisher has made it official, confirming the program and detailing it.

The Uplay Passport will come bundled with new copies of Ubisoft's "core" games, beginning this August with racing game Driver: San Francisco. The one-time use code will give gamers full access to the game's online modes as well as unspecified "exclusive" additional content.

According to Ubisoft, the Uplay Passport is an "adjunct" to Uplay, the in-game achievement service that launched with 2009's Assassin's Creed II and is still in beta.

The publisher did not specifically name upcoming games that will use the Uplay Passport, but Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, and Far Cry games fit the publisher's "core" description.

Gamers who borrow, rent, or purchase a Uplay Passport-enhanced game second-hand will need to pay $10 for the pass. For more on the first title to use the Uplay Passport, check out GameSpot's latest review of Driver: San Francisco.

ESRB rates side-scrolling Aliens: Infestation for DS
15 Jul 2011, 6:59 pm

Sega currently has a pair of Aliens titles in development. Gearbox Software is handling Aliens: Colonial Marines and Creative Assembly is at work on an unannounced series entry. However, it appears Sega has also commissioned a third Aliens game, this one for the DS.

According to a recent classification by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, a T-for-Teen rated side-scrolling franchise game called Aliens: Infestation is on the way for Nintendo's portable.

Though not yet officially announced by Sega, a rating by the Australian government from May indicates that WayForward Tech (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, A Boy and His Blob) is handling development of the game.

The ratings description states that Infestation will have players controlling a space marine squad as they run and jump through side-scrolling levels. Additionally, the listing indicates players will "use rifles, pistols, flamethrowers, and explosives to kill enemy soldiers and aliens (i.e., 'xenomorphs')."

As of press time, Sega had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

BloodRayne: Betrayal debuts next month
15 Jul 2011, 7:00 pm

Last month, Majesco told investors BloodRayne: Betrayal would launch by the end of July. While not quite qualifying as a betrayal, the publisher has pulled an about face on that statement, announcing today that the downloadable game would arrive for the PlayStation Network on August 30 and Xbox Live Arcade on August 31.

Unlike the previous 3D installments in the BloodRayne franchise, Betrayal is a side-scrolling 2D action game. However, the title will stay true to the series' tradition of copious amounts of gore, as the eponymous half-human, half-vampire protagonist cuts a swath through a horde of evil(er) undead with the help of a sword and a pistol. In addition to her conventional ordinance, BloodRayne also has her vampiric powers to fall back on, infecting enemies with her unique ailment and causing their bodies to explode in a viscous shower.

Developed by WayForward Technologies, BloodRayne: Betrayal will be the first Xbox 360 or PS3 title for the studio, which has to date specialized in Wii and handheld games. The developer has worked on a number of recognizable and critically well-received titles, including Contra 4, Batman: The Brave and the Bold - The Videogame, A Boy and His Blob, and Lit.

The full-motion game sports a number of improvements over the Wii iteration, including high definition graphics, online leaderboard support, a new scoring system, and Western clothing for PlayStation Home avatars.

Big In Japan July 4-10: L.A. Noire
15 Jul 2011, 7:58 am

Japanese gamers may have seen RPGs debuting, and sometimes staying, on the top spot of the Media Creates sales chart, but the week of July 4 marks the first time in months that two well-known titles outside of Japan finally made their mark. The aforementioned titles are L.A. Noire (Rockstar Games and Team Bondi) and InFamous 2 (Sony and Sucker Punch).

According to the charts, the PS3 version of L.A. Noire sits on the top spot with 58,436 units sold. The Xbox 360 version of the adventure game just missed the top 10, placing at 11th place with 12,621 copies sold. Sucker Punch's sandbox-style action game inFamous 2 debuted in second place with 33,474 units sold. On the flip side, the 3DS version of Tales of the Abyss, the former number one game, is now at 14th place with 10,034 units sold.

The recent release of the bug-killing action title Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon also enticed Japanese gamers, so much so that both versions of the game wound up on the top spots too. The PS3 version placed third with 30,189 units sold and the Xbox 360 version resides at fourth place with 17,817 sold.

Nintendo's presence is still apparent in the top 10. The Wiimote Plus Variety Pack makes its debut at fifth place with 17,008 units sold, while the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time still clings on at seventh place with 14,985 units sold. Additionally, the Wii version of 007 Goldeneye is at ninth place with 13,216 units sold, followed by Wii Sports Resort with 12,877 units sold. The Wiimote Plus Variety Pack is a collection of 12 minigames bundled together with a red Wiimote Plus controller. The bundle came out on July 7 and it's currently priced at 4,800 yen ($60.72).

On the hardware side of things, the 3DS has dropped to second place ever since its initial boost last week, selling 22,943 units during that particular week. The PSP reclaims its top spot, securing 26,373 units. The PS3 is somehow on third place with 22,900 units sold even with the top three titles on Media Creates' chart being PS3 titles.

Call of Duty Elite Beta Begins Today
15 Jul 2011, 7:45 am

Online Service for the Call of Duty Community Opens Worldwide Xbox 360 Beta on Call of Duty: Black Ops.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Call of Duty® Elite beta is live. The pre-release of this innovative new digital community platform, built expressly for the 30-million strong Call of Duty® fanbase, begins its staged launch today on Xbox 360® and Xbox LIVE utilizing Call of Duty®: Black Ops. The beta will be activated in phases for feature testing, with limited invitations rolling out in the coming weeks.

Call of Duty Elite will officially debut this fall as an integral part of Activision Publishing, Inc.'s hotly anticipated release, Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3, on November 8th. The 2.8 million Call of Duty gamers who have already registered to participate will now have the opportunity to connect, compete and improve in this evolution of the Call of Duty multi-player experience.

"Call of Duty Elite is all about connecting our amazing fans around the globe in ways never before possible and we are excited to get their feedback so they can help us further develop, tune and test the service, as we head into our launch in November with Modern Warfare 3," says Chacko Sonny, Studio Head, Beachhead Studio. "A public beta with the massive Call of Duty community is the best way to generate the scale we need for end-to-end testing.  While Call of Duty Elite will continue to evolve post-launch, we want to deliver the most polished, complete and rigorously tested service possible on day one. We're looking to get as many participants in the beta as possible, so we ask that fans stay patient as we ramp up in the coming weeks."

Call of Duty Elite will super charge the Call of Duty experience in three key ways:

Connect: Call of Duty Elite gives players unprecedented control over their multiplayer experience. This is a true social gaming platform. Players can compete against friends, gamers of similar skill levels or interests, join groups and clans, and play in organized competitions. They can also track the performance, progress and activity of their personal network, both in the game itself as well as via custom mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android smart phones, tablets and on the web.

Compete: Call of Duty Elite hosts events and competitions for players of all skill levels on a regular basis; both in-game and real-world prizes will be awarded across the Call of Duty Elite player roster when the service goes live on November 8th.

Assassin's Creed 3DS KIA
15 Jul 2011, 2:21 am

Saints Row: Drive By isn't the only title bailing on the 3DS. As part of an interview with Joystiq, Assassin's Creed: Revelations lead writer Darby McDevitt confirmed that Ubisoft pulled the plug on Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy, which was announced as part of the 3DS' coming-out party during the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy was to follow Ezio as he investigated an ancient castle at Masyaf, a city in modern-day Syria. According to Assassin's Creed lore, the castle served as the traditional home of the Assassin's guild.

According to McDevitt, it's no coincidence that Lost Legacy's plot line bears a striking resemblance to that of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which will arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this November.

"You may have heard of the game Lost Legacy for the 3DS," he said. "It was announced, but that kind of morphed into [Assassin's Creed: Revelations]." McDevitt did not indicate whether Ubisoft has any future plans for bringing the Assassin's Creed franchise to the 3DS.

Ubisoft had not returned a request for comment on the matter as of press time. For more on Assassin's Creed: Revelations, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
