After the success of Pong, Atari sought to expand home video games beyond the dedicated console by creating their first cartridge based system, the Atari 2600.

Not only was the Atari 2600 the one of the most important video game consoles of all time, but it also had the longest life of any home console, lasting at retail for 15 years.

Day 1 Studios loses Konami publishing deal
Dec 2nd 2011, 22:45

[UPDATE] Chicago-based developer lays off 95% of staff working on Konami's Silent Scope reboot; second, significantly smaller team trudges on.

[CORRECTION:] This story originally reported that Day 1 Studios had laid off approximately 95 percent of its staff. GameSpot's source has clarified this information, saying the 95 percent figure pertains to the Silent Scope team, and not the entire studio. A significantly smaller team remains at work on a second in-development project.

The original story can be found below.

The sun has set on Day 1 Studios. Today, GameSpot learned that the company has laid off approximately 100 employees--or 95 percent of its staff--as it winds down operations in preparation for closure.

A source told GameSpot that the Chicago-based studio's collapse came as a result of losing its publishing deal with Japanese publisher Konami. Day 1 had been at work on a new installment in Konami's classic arcade shooter Silent Scope, a franchise that has not seen a new installment since 2002's Silent Scope 3 for the PlayStation 2.

Day 1 was founded in 2001 by ex-FASA Interactive veteran Denny Thorley and Microsoft Game Studios' TJ Wagner. Out of the gate, the studio scored a hit with 2002's MechAssault for the original Xbox. After a MechAssault follow-up in 2004, the studio created the original property Fracture for LucasArts and then took over for Monolith on Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 3.

Neither Day 1 Studios nor Konami had returned GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

Online retailer introduces a test chamber's worth of new swag including Wheatley-styled flashlight, talking Cave Johnson portrait, and potato-powered GLaDOS.

Valve showed it can make gamers care about inanimate objects with the Companion Cube in the original Portal. ThinkGeek is hoping that affection will translate to its own inanimate objects, as the online store has introduced a new swatch of Portal-related merchandise.

Nine new products have been added to the testing-related lineup. Those with a sweet tooth might be interested in a Companion Cube cookie jar or Portal-themed cookie cutters. More practical offerings include an Aperture Science-branded shower curtain, 4-inch-by-5-inch solid metal bookends, and a Wheatley-styled flashlight.

Another plushie is also being added to the mix with the sound-making plush turret, and Cave Johnson is getting his due in picture form, complete with a JK Simmons voice-over at the push of a button. The final new addition comes in the Portal 2 PotatOS Science Kit allowing anyone to have a real potato-powered GLaDOS on hand.

All products range from $19.99 to $39.99 and are available now via the ThinkGeek website.

Microsoft Flight beta registration opens
Dec 2nd 2011, 22:54

Successor to flight simulation series to enter beta in January; applications now being accepted.

Microsoft's PC flight simulation series has been grounded since 2006's Flight Sim X. The company is finally ready to reboot the series with Microsoft Flight, but it needs a few test pilots first.

Microsoft is now accepting registrations for a beta program starting in January. The team says it will be sifting through submissions over the next couple of months and responding to qualifying participants throughout the beta phase.

Microsoft Flight will have players running various missions, ranging from waypoint challenges to aerobatic routines. Light, story-based missions will also have players finding missing persons, carrying cargo or passengers, and other similar scenarios.

Recent promotional videos for the game have used terms like "fly free" and a quote from Shakespeare, "My soul is in the sky," backed by wispy music and scenes of open air. Released screenshots also primarily feature smaller propeller planes, rather than jumbo jets or Cessnas.

Microsoft Flight is built using Games for Windows Live and will include both single and multiplayer modes. No release window has been announced for the game.

Zynga targeting $900 million IPO
Dec 3rd 2011, 00:11

Social game maker trims previous filing valuation as investors express concern over sustainability and voting power dispersal.

Zynga is finally going public, but market fluctuations are changing the social game maker's plans on a weekly basis. The company filed initial public offering (IPO) papers stating a valuation of $14.05 billion just two weeks ago, but now it is scaling back that number to stay in the good graces of investors.

Going into its IPO, Zynga is looking to issue 100 million shares at a price between $8.50 and $10 each, according to Reuters. This would put the total valuation for the company at $9.04 billion, compared to the $14.05 billion figure bandied about after its initial IPO filing.

However, some would-be investors are concerned about the future and the potential impact that a slowed pace of growth alongside Facebook might have on the social game maker. Other concerns surrounding the IPO include potential issues regarding Zynga CEO Mark Pincus holding a class of shares that grant 70 times more voting power than the common stock. Following the IPO of 100 million shares, Pincus will retain 36.2 percent of total voting power. Reuters quotes a buyer saying, "Future shareholders should assume Zynga won't listen to them."

Zynga is to set its IPO share price on December 15 with public trading starting on December 16.

PC | Saints Row: The Third Review
Dec 2nd 2011, 22:07

Some games create atmospheric worlds that attempt to draw you in with moving stories about characters seeking a second chance, or cast you as troubled superheroes who push themselves to the limit to fight evil. Saints Row: The Third is not like those games. Rather, it's the kind of game that gives you weapons called apocafists with which you can punch people, instantly making them explode in a bloody mess. The Third won't impress you with knockout visuals, move you with an absorbing story, or engage you with challenging combat. What it does, better than just about any game before, is embrace the idea of an open world as a place for play, constantly giving you access to awesome new toys and providing you with no shortage of exciting opportunities to use them.

The early missions are packed with incredible moments.

No knowledge of earlier Saints Row games is needed to jump into the insanity of The Third. Following an incredible opening sequence that involves the kind of bank heist that only the Saints can pull off, the gang is transplanted from their hometown of Stilwater to the city of Steelport. As their leader, it's up to you to lead them from upstart newcomers to rulers of the town, which means frequently coming into conflict with the local gangs, the masked Luchadores, stylish Morningstars, and Tron-inspired Deckers. Along the way, you meet some great new characters, like Oleg, a strongman so huge, he can only ride in the bed of pickup trucks and who defies expectations by being learned and philosophical. And at key moments, the action is energized by fitting uses of music; the pounding rhythms of Kanye West's "Power" make a great early set piece even more exciting, for instance, and a fun sing-along between your character and another creates feelings of warmth and camaraderie among the Saints. Occasionally, the game's "anything goes" tone goes a little too far--a mission that uses human trafficking of sex workers as a plot point to support its cartoonish mayhem is one example--but the story typically succeeds at being absurd, goofy fun.

If you choose, you can make it all the more absurd by creating a character who speaks in zombie grunts or wears an animal mascot suit (when he opts to wear anything at all). The number of character customization options is impressive, and there are no restrictions on what elements you combine. If you wish to create a blonde bombshell with a beard or a mean-looking man who sounds like a woman from Eastern Europe, you can. Seeing a man in a sexy cowgirl outfit or a woman wearing a giant Johnny Gat head in cutscenes in which everyone treats him or her as a respected gang boss is hilarious. And if you get bored with your character's current appearance, voice, or outfit, plastic surgery and clothing from the varied boutiques of Steelport cost a pittance, so you can reinvent yourself as often as you please.

This kind of freedom characterizes the entire Saints Row: The Third experience. Previous Saints Row games required you to do activities to earn enough respect to proceed to the next story mission. In The Third, you're never held back from advancing through the story, or from doing just about anything else. From the moment you arrive in Steelport, you have access to an assortment of vehicles to steal for chop shops and targets to assassinate for clients, as well as a tremendous list of challenges you can strive to complete or ignore. Many of these reward you for doing things that you might want to do for fun anyway, like streaking, vehicle surfing, driving in oncoming traffic, catching big air in cars, doing wheelies or stoppies on motorcycles, nailing basejumps, killing people in those creepy mascot outfits, and much, much more. You earn respect for just about everything you do, and as you level up, you gain access to a host of upgrades--health increases, combat abilities, the option to recruit more gang members to follow you around, and much more.

Yes, "more" is the driving philosophy of The Third--more awesome weapons, more amazing vehicles, more really fun stuff to do. The available activities include returning favorites like Insurance Fraud and Mayhem, and a number of great new pursuits. Guardian Angel puts you in a helicopter with a rocket launcher or sniper rifle to protect Saints on the ground. In Tank Mayhem, you must create a certain amount of destruction within a time limit, but you get to do it by harnessing the tremendous firepower of a tank. Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax is a reality-show gauntlet of deadly traps and deadlier enemies, in which everything is fair game, except shooting pictures of pandas, because as we all know, killing pandas is unethical. With so many opportunities to earn respect, you're totally free to do only those activities you enjoy, and ignore the rest.

One thing you definitely shouldn't ignore is the main story. Within just the first few missions, you plummet out of a plane and into an airborne shoot-out, skydive into a penthouse that belongs to a rival gang, use a UAV drone to call in guided missiles on tanks, and more. The missions eventually become a bit predictable for a while, serving as introductions to the other activities and diversions available to you in Steelport. But before long, they get wild again, packing in numerous surprises before culminating in one of two outrageous final missions. (Don't worry; after experiencing one ending, you have the option of replaying the penultimate mission and making the choice that takes you to the alternate ending.)

BioWare, EA trademark Paper, Scissors, Stone
Dec 2nd 2011, 19:24

Australian trademark filing potentially points to another LucasArts-related project for EA RPG house.

EA, BioWare, and LucasArts are weeks away from shipping Star Wars: The Old Republic, but it appears their collaboration won't be ending there.

As spotted by Halfbrick Studios' Ryan Langley, the November 30 filing is scant on details. The listing specifies the "Paper, Scissors, Stone" trademark does indeed fall within the computer games category--specifically featuring science fiction themes--and has been given an M classification. The publisher is listed as EA, with "BioWare & Lucas" under author.

BioWare and LucasArts already have ties dating back to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the original Xbox, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that they could have plans for future collaborations beyond The Old Republic.

As for original BioWare properties, the developer is set to unveil its latest new game (pictured) at the Spike Video Game Awards on December 10. Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced that it had acquired social game developer KlickNation, which will merge with BioWare's San Francisco operations to form BioWare Social.

Battlefield 3 goes Back to Karkand on PS3 Dec. 6
Dec 2nd 2011, 17:07

First downloadable add-on for military shooter to go live on Xbox 360 and PC December 13 with new maps, mode, weapons, vehicles, and more.

Battlefield 3 players can finally go Back to Karkand next week…on the PlayStation 3, at least. Electronic Arts has confirmed a December 6 PS3 debut for the Back to Karkand expansion pack, with the add-on to be made available for Xbox 360 and PC players on December 13.

Highlighting the Back to Karkand map pack are four playfields from Battlefield 2 that have been updated with developer DICE's new Frostbite 2 engine: Strike at Karkand, Wake Island, Gulf of Oman, and Sharqi Peninsula. Gamers will also find the return of Battlefield 2's Conquest Assault mode, three new vehicles, 10 new weapons, new achievements/trophies, and more.

The disparity in release dates is the result of a deal EA struck with Sony that would see all Battlefield 3 add-on content given a one-week head start on the PS3. That exclusivity window was explained as a substitute enticement for PS3 players when EA tried to renege on its promise of giving away Battlefield 1943 copies to those who purchased Battlefield 3 on Sony's system. However, after a class-action lawsuit was filed, EA pulled another about-face and said it would honor the original deal after all.

For more on DICE's latest shooter, check out GameSpot's review of Battlefield 3.

Xenoblade Chronicles coming to North America
Dec 2nd 2011, 18:11

[UPDATE] Nintendo lists long-awaited Wii RPG as an April release, now available to preorder from GameStop or direct from Nintendo itself.

Monolith Soft's Xenoblade Chronicles has been highly anticipated by a certain sect of Wii and role-playing game fans, but it was feared the game would never see a release in North America after Nintendo said it had no plans to localize the game. That has apparently changed, as Nintendo today posted new Xenoblade art to its Facebook page as rumors swirled that the title would be exclusive to specialty retailer GameStop.

A spy shot of what is purported to be a GameStop release list popped up on games forum NeoGAF earlier this morning showing an entry reading "Xenoblade Chronicles GS Exclusive" listed as an April 3 release. As if to corroborate the leak, Nintendo of America subsequently posted three pieces of concept art from the game on its Facebook page.

This latest wrinkle follows a fan campaign to convince Nintendo to localize and release three games--Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower--in North America, dubbed Project Rainfall. It's hard to say whether this is a direct result of the fan initiative, but it is likely to garner Nintendo some good will within the community.

Even if Xenoblade is coming to NA early next year, it's no guarantee that the other two Project Rainfall games will receive the same treatment. However, like Xenoblade before them, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower are slated for a release in Europe next year.

For more on Xenoblade Chronicles, check out GameSpot's review of the European release.

[UPDATE] Nintendo has confirmed the news and put up a product page for Xenoblade Chronicles on its North American website. The page lists the game as an April release and has links to preorder the title from GameStop and directly from Nintendo itself.

Notch steps down as Minecraft lead
Dec 2nd 2011, 17:42

Markus Persson hands over reins of indie hit to Jens Bergensten, plans to stay on dev team but also work on "new project."

Markus "Notch" Persson is a name that has become intrinsically tied to the Mojang-developed sensation Minecraft. However, with Minecraft seeing full release for the PC on November 18, Notch is now stepping aside as lead developer on the game.

In a post to his blog this morning, Persson confirmed that Jens Bergensten took over lead developer duties yesterday. Persson also sought to reassure Minecraft devotees, saying that he and Bergensten have a similar vision as to where the game should go.

"We've been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I'm amazed at how much in sync we two are when it comes to how to design the game," he said. "And when we don't agree, we discuss it, and something much better comes out at a result. He's truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him."

Persson won't be vacating Minecraft development altogether, but he will be taking a vacation. Once back, he also plans to start working on "some new project."

Beyond Minecraft, Mojang's only other known projects are Scrolls and Cobalt, which is being codeveloped with Oxeye Game Studio. Currently the subject of a legal spat with Bethesda Softworks, Scrolls draws elements of its gameplay from collectible card games and board games.

Minecraft is expected to be available for the Xbox 360 in early 2012. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of the PC version.

iOS Tetris gets a season pass
Dec 2nd 2011, 17:59

$30 T-Club annual subscription plan gives players exclusive discounts and add-on content for latest version of block-dropping puzzler.

Since Tetris first came out in the mid-'80s, numerous publishers have attempted to put their own spin on the block-turning puzzle game. Electronic Arts is the latest to bring a new idea to the tried-and-true formula, as the publisher has launched a new iOS edition of the game with a subscription service built in.

The simply titled Tetris App includes the game's Marathon mode, as well as a new one-touch control option, a level-based Galaxy mode that includes power-ups, and a ranking system. For those who want more, EA is offering membership in the T-Club, a subscription program that "gives members access to exclusive discounts and content, premium Tetris Log challenges, and a booster to progress their Tetris Rank faster."

Membership in the T-Club carries a $3 monthly subscription fee, or $30 for a full year. The Tetris App is currently available at an "introductory" price of $1.

GT 5 Spec II arriving in Japan Feb 2012
Dec 2nd 2011, 05:14

Sony formally announces arrival of Spec II in Japan; pack to include game and all previous DLC; no formal announcement on European or US release.

After five years in development, Polyphony Digital's PlayStation exclusive racer Gran Turismo 5 shipped 6.37 million units worldwide following its highly-anticipated release last November. Publisher Sony has since supported the game, releasing a "Spec 2.0" update and downloadable content pack earlier this year.

Now, Japanese gaming site Andria Sang is reporting that Sony Japan has formally announced the Gran Turismo 5 Spec II pack, which will include the updated version of Gran Turismo 5 with all the content from the previous update, as well as a product code for downloading the DLC content released earlier this year.

The site is reporting the Spec II pack will hit store shelves in Japan in February 2012, and will cost ¥4,980 ($63.99).

The Gran Turismo 5 "Spec 2.0" update offers new interiors for all cars in the game, reduced load times, the ability to save during a lengthy race, and the option to adjust weather conditions.

Additionally, the update includes revisions to the game's Photo and Shuffle modes, offers full support for Logitech's GT5 and GT7 racing wheels, and gives gamers the 2011 versions of 11 NASCAR vehicles.

The DLC offered in the Spec II pack includes new vehicles and tracks.

Sony reportedly told Eurogamer that it has no plans to release the pack in Europe at this time. The publisher has also made no other mention of the pack hitting the US or any other territories.

Square Enix announces Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter
Dec 2nd 2011, 04:51

Card-based game to be released in arcades and on the 3DS; manga and anime spin-off in the works.

The last card game Square Enix published for arcades was the 2008 fantasy-based Lord of Vermillion series. Now, the Final Fantasy-publisher plans to take the card concept towards a new futuristic IP. The new title, called Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter, will be released in arcades and on the 3DS in Japan in 2012.

In the game, players control vehicles that can transform into robots. Users will have to use cards to initiate attacks and special moves against enemy robots, while alternating between vehicle and robot mode.

In the arcade version, the arcade cabinet will transform according to the mode the player is in. For instance, if a player is in a driving segment, they will have to use the steering wheel on the cabinet. If in robot mode, gamers will have access to special levers that appear from the machine.

In addition, the publisher is teaming up with Japanese car makers Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Mazda to bring licensed cars to the game. The game will be developed by Rocket Studio, renowned for the Dragon Quest: Monsters Battle Road arcade series. At this point, there aren't any concrete details on the 3DS version of the game.

Furthermore, Square Enix has plans to launch a manga and TV anime series for the franchise. The former will be out in Japan's Sueisha's Saikyou Jump magazine starting December 3, while the latter is currently in production by A-1 Pictures studio.

Gyrozetter will be out in arcades on 2012 in Japan.

Doublesix lands publishing deal for Xbox Live Arcade version of Burn Zombie Burn follow-up; coming this month.

All Zombies Must Die!, spiritual successor to the 2009 PlayStation Network release Burn Zombie Burn, was announced as a PC and PSN title in July. An Xbox Live Arcade version has since been confirmed, and today Square Enix announced that it would be the one publishing it.

Dubbed an "RPG shooter," the top-down, multi-directional zombie shooter is set to be supplemented with a character leveling system, side quests, collectible items, and weapon crafting. Unlike its spiritual predecessor which only supported two players, All Zombies Must Die! will support four-player local play.

As with the PSN and PC versions, the XBLA version of All Zombies Must Die! is set for release later this month. For more on All Zombies Must Die!, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

NeverDead, the dismemberment-heavy third-person action game from Kojima Productions veteran Shinta Nojiri, was first revealed during Konami's 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing. News surrounding the game dried up until this year's E3, and now, the campy action adventure has a release date.

Konami announced today that NeverDead will be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on January 31. That date is proving to be popular among Japanese publishers and their high-profile releases, as Namco Bandai's SoulCalibur V and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2 are also scheduled for release on that day.

Developed in conjunction with Rebellion Software, NeverDead puts players in the shoes of Bryce Boltzmann, an immortal demon slayer that is prone to dismemberment. Getting into the enemy fray is encouraged here, as amputated body parts can be used to traverse previously inaccessible areas, utilized as weapons, or reattached to regain mobility.

The game will feature massively destructible environments and various modes of multiplayer, including cooperative and competitive play. Rebellion's recent releases include last year's Aliens vs. Predator and Rogue Warrior in 2009.

Star Wars: The Old Republic annual profit to hit $80 million - Analyst

Wedbush's Pachter believes EA will pay LucasArts 35% in licensing fees; EEDAR's Divnich sees "little risk of failure."

As the noise surrounding Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts' latest military shooters fades, the battleground is shifting to the massively multiplayer online role-playing market. Earlier this week, Activision Blizzard president Bobby Kotick projected EA won't get much benefit from Star Wars: The Old Republic due to LucasArts' licensing agreement. However, a handful of analysts feel that Kotick missed the mark with that assessment.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Wedbush's Michael Pachter said that he expects EA to pay out 35 percent of SW:TOR's earnings to LucasArts, after the publisher has recouped its own costs.

"My best guess is that they will attract 1.5 million subscribers paying around $15 a month, so they should generate around $270 million in revenue," he said. "If LucasArts gets 35 percent and if EA incurs around 35 percent operating expense, they make 30 percent, or around $80 million per year, in profit. That's not bad."

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich also believes EA stands to turn a hefty profit on its upcoming MMOG, telling Eurogamer that he expects the game to draw 3 million subscribers by next June.

"We see little risk of failure for The Old Republic," he said. "Kotick's comments are valid in the sense that licensors do take a piece of the pie and is an economical hurdle that entertainment has been struggling with for years. In the same respect, how successful would EA's MMO be without the Star Wars brand?"

"It's a give and take scenario, but given EA's historical ability to negotiate favorable license terms, I don't believe Lucas's share is a detriment to the game's profitability," he continued. "Taking into account multiple years in service and expansion packs, $500 million in total revenue is not a far stretch. If an MMO can't be profitable at $500m in revenue, then we are all doomed."

Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to launch on the PC December 20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
