EA acquires social RPG developer KlickNation
Dec 2nd 2011, 00:14

Dragon Age publisher picks up RPG-centric social developer; studio renamed BioWare Sacramento, forming BioWare Social.

EA has for the past couple of years been on a buying spree of casual game developers, having picked up the likes of PopCap, Playfish, and Chillingo, to name a few. That trend continued today, as EA announced that it has acquired social role-playing game developer KlickNation. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

KlickNation is primarily known for its free-to-play, microtransaction-supported offerings such as SuperHero City, Age of Champions, and Six Gun Galaxy. The newly acquired studio will be renamed BioWare Sacramento, and it will join with BioWare San Francisco (Dragon Age Legends) to form a new business unit, BioWare Social.

Speaking to the acquisition, BioWare head Ray Muzyka said, "KlickNation's expertise in building innovative and compelling RPGs for social platforms makes them a seamless tuck-in with the BioWare team at EA. We share the same creative values. The new BioWare Social unit will bring BioWare and EA franchises to the growing audience of core gamers who are looking for high-quality, rich gameplay experiences on social platforms."

BioWare now counts seven studios under its umbrella, with the developer also maintaining Canadian outfits in Edmonton and Montreal, as well as shops in San Francisco, California; Austin, Texas; Fairfax, Virginia; and Galway, Ireland.
