More Hitman on the way as Deus Ex developer plans to add hundreds of new jobs, second Quebec-based studio; third "AAA" title confirmed.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution kicked off the holiday release season with a warm critical reception and more than 2.18 million units shipped, marking a successful launch for Eidos Montreal's first game. Now the Canadian development house is bringing on more staff to handle a new project and future titles in the Hitman series.
Eidos Montreal's parent company, Square Enix, announced today that it will be creating 100 new jobs at the studio, with a new second Eidos Montreal studio opening in 2012 that is set to add another 150 jobs.
Set to open next year, the new studio will be led by Lee Singleton, current general manager of Square Enix London Studios, and it will collaborate with IO Interactive on future Hitman titles. Announced in May, Hitman: Absolution will be the first entry in the series since 2006's Hitman: Blood Money.
The expansion of the current Montreal studio will be put to work on a third "AAA" project outside of the Deus Ex and Thief franchises. Canadian Business reports the additional staff will also aid in research and development on next-generation consoles.
Quebec has become a hotbed for games development in recent years with new branches of THQ, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Funcom, and more breaking ground in the Great White North. Eidos Montreal's expansion will add to the already more than 8,200 video game-related jobs in Quebec, a number the Entertainment Software Associate of Canada says accounts for more than half of the Canadian industry.
