Sony under pressure to drop PS Vita price - Analyst
Aug 8th 2011, 16:59

The 3DS price drop goes into effect later this week, and its impact is already reverberating throughout the industry. Speaking with Bloomberg, Ace Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda said all eyes are now on Sony to see whether it reacts with a price cut for the upcoming PlayStation Vita.

"Gamers are increasingly anticipating Sony to lower prices, especially after the 3DS cut," Yasuda said. "Sony is under major pressure to cut the price of the Vita or risk a major failure."

That's a risk Sony is apparently willing to take. Last week, Sony executive deputy president Kaz Hirai told reporters the Nintendo drop wouldn't impact plans for the PS Vita.

"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

If Sony does cut the price of the PS Vita before launch, it wouldn't be the first time the company has pulled such a move. With less than two months to go before the PlayStation 3's 2006 Japanese launch, Sony cut the Japanese price of the 20GB system from the originally announced ¥60,000 ($515 at the time) to ¥49,980 (around $429).

The PS Vita is expected to launch in Japan this year, with North American and European launches following in 2012.

Supreme Court justice Kagan 'sweated' video game decision - Report
Aug 8th 2011, 16:37

Elena Kagan says she struggled "mightily" to make up her mind in dispute over selling violent games to minors.

In late June, the United States Supreme Court sided with the video game industry in the case of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association. The Court deemed that a law that sought to prevent retailers from selling violent video games to minors was unconstitutional by a 7-2 vote. Now, one of the justices siding with the industry is speaking out, saying she struggled "mightily" to make a decision.

"It was the case where I struggled most and thought most often I'm on the wrong side of it," said Justice Elena Kagan at the Aspen Institute's McCloskey Speaker Series, as reported by the Aspen Daily News.

"You could see why the government would have wanted to do this and you can see the kind of danger it was worried about, the kind of effects these extremely violent video games have on young people."

The Supreme Court's decision ruled that the law ran in opposition of the First Amendment. While Kagan did decide the law was unconstitutional based on this violation, she said this was no easy conclusion to reach.

"But I couldn't figure out how to square that with our First Amendment precedence and precedence is very important to me," she said. "I sweated over that mightily."

Continuing, Kagan said, "I think what you have to say, and people have been saying this, is this is a court that is extremely protective of the First Amendment and extremely protective of speech," she said. “There is no question the court has a very expansive view of the First Amendment."

Gears of War 3 devs working on new IP

While the rate of releases in the Halo franchise only accelerated after the original trilogy's 2007 conclusion, it appears as if Microsoft's other Xbox 360-exclusive shooter franchise will take a different approach once it finishes its first cycle of games.

According to an Epic Games job posting, the next project for the Gears of War 3 team isn't a fourth installment in the series, but an all-new intellectual property. The company is currently hiring gameplay programmers to join the developers finishing up Gears of War 3 to work on "a new unannounced IP." Unfortunately, the posting suggested no details about the project, other than its expected use of Epic's own Unreal Engine.

"Our gameplay programmers have an intrinsic understanding of what makes a game fun and the analytical mind to break that down into its constituent parts," the listing explains. "They experiment with game design and use rapid prototyping, yet have the engineering background to make strong architectural and algorithmic decisions. If you are a game designer trapped inside the body of an engineer, we'd like to hear from you."
