Sep 20th 2011, 19:38

Highest-rated Xbox 360 exclusive of the year launches today at retailers worldwide, kick-starting the holiday season in explosive fashion.

REDMOND, WASH., SEPTEMBER 20, 2011 - At the stroke of midnight last night, the blockbuster holiday season officially ignited with a bang, as “Gears of War 3″ hit store shelves with more than 20,000 retailers worldwide marking the occasion with midnight madness events. At the blockbuster game’s marquee launch event in New York City at the Best Buy Theater, well over a thousand rabid fans flocked to the launch party in iconic Times Square to be among the first to experience the year’s highest-rated Xbox 360 exclusive(1).

“Today’s launch of ‘Gears of War 3′ kicks off the biggest holiday season of blockbuster games in the history of Xbox 360,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer. “The team at Epic Games has raised the bar yet again and we’re extremely excited to see fans around the world get their hands on the game and jump into the action.”

Featuring cinematic storytelling penned by New York Times bestselling author Karen Traviss, a campaign reviewers are calling “one of the most exciting on any system(2),” and a multiplayer experience that “feels more like four fully-formed and polished games(3),” “Gears of War 3″ is being hailed by fans and critics as this holiday’s first must-have and “everything a triple-A blockbuster should be(4).”

“This is our biggest ‘Gears’ game yet, and even though it’s the third installment in the trilogy, it’s the easiest to jump into if you’re a new fan,” said Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski. “We’ve added more cooperative gameplay options and built in accessibility features throughout the game to make it approachable and fun for new players and series veterans alike.”

Developed by renowned studio Epic Games exclusively for Xbox 360, “Gears of War 3″ is the climactic conclusion to one of the most celebrated and memorable sagas in gaming history. The last bastion of humanity lies in ruins, and amidst the shattered remnants of civilization and ominous whispers of almost certain extinction, Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad must take up their Lancers and make one final stand for survival against the cataclysmic threat of the infected Lambent horde.

Developed exclusively for Xbox 360, “Gears of War 3″ is available worldwide (except in Japan, where it will release on Sept. 22), and is available in three distinct editions - Standard ($59.99 USD), Limited ($79.99) and Epic ($149.99). Crytek UK reigniting Homefront
Sep 20th 2011, 12:04

While THQ's stock dived as a result of the mixed critical reception for Homefront, the publisher hinted in May that a sequel was on the way when it announced that 2.6 million sales represented "a solid start for this new franchise." Hopes of a full sequel were dealt a blow back in July when THQ confirmed that it was to shutter Kaos Studios, but today the publisher confirmed that another Homefront game is indeed in the works.

The sequel to Homefront will be released at some point in the THQ's 2014 fiscal year, which translates as some time between April 2013 and the end of March 2014. The game, which does not yet have a title, will be developed by Crytek's Nottingham studio, which was known as Free Radical before it was bought up by the German developer best known for the Crysis series and Crytek engine.

Free Radical's most recent game before being annexed was the critically disparaged Haze, though it was best known for the highly regarded Timesplitters series. Details on the game were scarce, save that it wil be powered by "the very latest" CryEngine technology.

The game will be released on "PC and home console platforms," according to THQ. The press release for the game does not confirm specifics, though it does reference both PlayStation and Xbox platforms, with no mention of the Wii U or other Nintendo offerings. Battlefield 3 open beta begins September 29
Sep 20th 2011, 16:57

Electronic Arts wants Battlefield 3 combat-tested before the military first-person shooter hits stores October 25. To that end, the publisher today announced an open beta test for the game's multiplayer mode will kick off September 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of the game.

However, some players will be able to download the beta a little early. Those who preorder the PC edition of the game through EA's digital storefront Origin will be able to get into the action beginning September 27, as will those who preordered the Limited Edition of EA's 2010 military shooter, Medal of Honor.

Players will be able to play the game's Rush mode on the Operation Metro map, set in the subways of Paris. The Rush mode has two teams fighting over key strategic points on the map, with one squad designated as attackers and the other ordered to protect the locations.

Battlefield 3--which EA says has been in development for three years--will sport both a single-player campaign and an online component, which can be played with up to 64 players (for the PC version only). It will also support co-op play for its campaign and will let gamers pilot jets, among other vehicles.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Battlefield 3.

[CORRECTION]: EA has indicated that the beta will end October 10. We regret the error.

Batman: Arkham City PC pushed to November
Sep 20th 2011, 17:32

Vigilantes aren't all about gadgets and goon squad beatdowns. There's also a lot of waiting and watching involved, and PC gamers interested in Batman: Arkham City are going to have to learn that lesson first hand.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the PC edition of Arkham City will not arrive alongside the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions on October 18. Instead the publisher has pushed the PC debut back to a November release window. As for the console versions, WBIE did confirm that that they have gone gold in advance of their global launches.

This isn't the first Arkham City slight for the PC crowd. In July, WBIE announced a $100 Collector's Edition package of the game that would come with a Batman statue, an art book, soundtrack, exclusive downloadable skin, and more. However, only the console versions of the game are receiving Collector's Edition counterparts.

Like its predecessor, Arkham City drops Batman in the confines of an unconventional prison. But where Arkham Asylum stuck players in the halls and courtyards of a mental hospital overrun with the Joker's goons and allies, Arkham City deposits them in a sprawling neighborhood of Gotham City that has been walled off to contain the criminal element.

Under the watchful eye of "warden" Dr. Hugo Strange, who knows Batman's secret identity, inmates of Arkham City are free to do anything they want short of attempting escape. In addition to Strange, the game will feature Batman villains like Two-Face and the Joker.

Big in Japan Sept. 5-11: Tales of Xillia
Sep 20th 2011, 10:02

Recently, Namco Bandai's announced shipment figures for the recent entry in the Tales of series, Tales of Xillia, with the company stating the title had sold over half a million copies within the week of September 5 to September 11. According to the recent update on the Media Creates sales chart for Japan, those figures were good enough to land the new Tales game in the number one position.

Tales of Xillia sold 525,605 copies and was number one on the chart. Just behind it were Resident Evil Revival Selection and Resistance 3 for the PS3, which sold 93,768 and 20,342 units respectively. Tales of Xillia features a new take on the Linear Motion battle system made popular by past titles, new battle options like in-game party-swapping and tag-team attacks, and a story featuring two protagonists with two different introductions leading to the same plot.

Resident Evil: Revival Selection is a re-release collection that contains high definition-remastered versions of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica. For the overseas market, the remastered titles will be sold separately as downloadable titles on both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Resident Evil 4 will be out on September 20 while Resident Evil Code: Veronica will be out on September 27.

Former number one game Grand Knights History bumped down to fifth place with 19,712 units sold. The PS3 version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd dropped from second to fourth place with 20,162 units sold, while the Wii rhythm title Rhythm Heaven dropped from third to seventh place with 15,600 units sold.

The PS3 got a huge boost in hardware sales thanks to the aforementioned top three titles, which is possibly supported by the exclusive Tales of Vesperia-themed PS3 bundle that came out on the same week. The system sales went up to 64,786 units, which was twice the number of the last chart's unit numbers for the system. Trailing behind is the 3DS and PSP; the former sold 49,076 units while the latter sold 25,391 units.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 launches January 31
Sep 20th 2011, 06:57

By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpotPosted Sep 19, 2011 11:57 pm PT

Square Enix nails down North American launch date for PS3 and Xbox 360 role-playing game sequel.

In July, Square Enix announced that its role-playing game sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 would arrive in North America in January 2012. Today the publisher affirmed that it will meet that release window, but just barely.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will launch for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on January 31 of next year. The publisher also confirmed that downloadable content previously announced for the game in Japan would also arrive in North America, though it still declined to detail exactly what that would entail. The North American version of the game will also feature the theme song, “New World,” sung by Warner Bros. Records artist Charice.

Final Fantasy game, XIII-2 is a direct sequel to 2010's well-received Final Fantasy XIII. It stars Final Fantasy XIII protagonist Lightning and is being directed by series veteran Motomu Toriyama. In an interview with GameSpot, Toriyama said XIII-2 will be "perhaps even darker and more mysterious" than Final Fantasy XIII.
