Final Fantasy Brigade announced for mobile phones in Japan
Dec 5th 2011, 10:12

Social game to have 2D-presented battles and Theatrhythm art style; game out late December.

With Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the horizon in the next few weeks in Japan, gamers who still demand a portable RPG fix can look forward to Square Enix's next venture. The company, together with Japanese social network operator DeNA, unveiled its latest collaboration in social gaming entitled Final Fantasy Brigade.

According to Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada (via 4Gamer), the RPG will feature battles that are reminiscent of past 2D Final Fantasy titles. Players will have to team up with other players to gain experience by fighting monsters and rival airships while building up an armada. Gamers can also use existing Final Fantasy characters as assists, like Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII. The game's art style will be the same as the one used in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on the 3DS.

Beta testing for the title will start in the middle of December on the Mobage social gaming platform. The game will be available late December for selected phones in Japan. A smartphone and web version will arrive shortly for download. An English version has yet to be announced.

This isn't the first time Square Enix has been busy on social network platforms and mobile phones. Knights of the Crystal was a social game on Facebook that bears Final Fantasy characteristics, while Before Crisis â€"Final Fantasy VII- came out in 2004.

Asia Shippin' Out Dec 4-10: Mario Kart 7
Dec 5th 2011, 10:13

Go-karting, Monopoly-esque property acquisitions, and first-person shooting are the top choices for the week.

Following up after last week's release of Infinity Blade II, the starting week of December brings in a few more notable hits on Asian gaming shelves, particularly on Nintendo's side. First up is Mario Kart 7, the next iteration of the Mario Kart franchise for the 3DS.

The racing game now features 3D visuals, 32 tracks, and kart customization. GameSpot's recent review praised it for its track design and customization, but criticized it for certain online implementations and a lack of a mission mode. Check out the full article here.

Next up is the English version of Nintendo and Square Enix's Itadaki Street series, now called Fortune Street, for the Wii. This version is the first time the series is published outside of its native language.

Similar to Monopoly, players will have to roll a die to determine how far they move across the board and purchase as much property blocks as possible. Gamers win a round of the game by making it back to the bank with the board's required amount of stocks, property value and available gold. Players have a choice of using characters from the Mario and Dragon Quest franchise like Mario, Luigi, Yangus, Jessica and Princess Peach.

Finally, gamers can check out the very first DLC for Battlefield 3, subtitled Back to Karkand. The download features four big maps from previous games and a new mode called Conquest Assault. The mode puts a team of defenders against a team of attackers as they fight all over three different flag-capture points, with the catch being the attackers starting with fewer respawns and defenders not having any spawn bases. Gamers who preordered the title will get the map for free, while everyone else will have to spend $15 for it.

Big in Japan Nov 21-27: Skyward Sword
Dec 5th 2011, 02:24

New Zelda title is at the top spot of the Japan sales chart; Wii sales double but 3DS still number one.

Trust Nintendo to pull rank after the release of one of their major IPs, with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii this week securing the top spot of the recent Media Create sales update for the week of November 21 to 27.

The Wii title sold 194,978 units in its debut week, beating out other titles, like Sega's 7th Dragon 2020 (122,498 units), Saint Seiya Senki (66,557 units), and the PS3 version of Metal Gear Solid HD Edition (61,192). For comparison's sake, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii sold 139,011 units in its first week of release in 2006, while The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS sold 302,887 units in its debut week in 2007.

Skyward Sword went on sale on November 20 this year, with GameSpot's review praising the game's excellent dungeon designs and strong visuals, but also criticising the title for its troublesome controls and predictable formula. For more information, check out GameSpot's recent coverage of the title.

Former number-one title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3--distributed by Square Enix in the region--was bumped to 10th place, with 29,726 sold. Other former top-spot holders fell just below the top 10 spot for the week; One Piece: Gigant Battle 2 sold 27,379 units, and was placed at 11th place, while Ninokuni: Wrath of the White Witch sold 20,185 units, and was at 13th place.

Wii sales doubled for the week, possibly due to the release of a new Zelda title in Japan. Nintendo sold 20,148 units; previously, 13,613 units were sold on the week of November 14. Meanwhile, Nintendo sold 120,920 units of the 3DS, while Sony sold 34,031 units of the PS3, and 33,151 units of the PSP.

Last of Us teases PS3 exclusive
Dec 5th 2011, 05:01

Video Game Awards (VGA) organisers hint at upcoming PS3 exclusive to be revealed live during Spike TV's annual awards on December 10; teaser site now live.

Last month, Spike TV executive producer Geoff Keighley revealed that this year's Video Game Awards (VGAs) would play host to a number of big game announcements, from Metal Gear Solid: Rising to Microsoft's next instalment of Alan Wake.

It now appears that Keighley wasn't done teasing at all the 2011 VGA news just yet. On November 30, the host of this year's awards offered up yet another tasty morsel via Twitter, declaring:

"Yes, at VGAs we will be revealing a PS3 exclusive you won't believe. We'll be able to share more soon."

Keighley then followed up with another two Twitter posts about the new title: the first confirming the game's existence; and the second linking to a teaser site for the new game, titled Last of Us, and re-confirming that the game would be revealed live during this year's VGAs.

The teaser site currently features two clips. The first shows real-life news footage of civil unrest and rioting, with a voiceover hinting at a US-centric point of view. The second clip, shorter than the first, simply shows footage of an insect in its natural habitat, and does not feature any voiceover.

This year's VGAs will feature announcements surrounding Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Alan Wake, and BioWare, with the latter slated to tease a new game from a new studio at the event.

Last year, the awards featured reveals of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Prototype 2, Mass Effect 3, Insane, and SSX.

The 2011 VGAs will take place on December 10, and will be broadcast live on Spike TV and MTV2, beginning at 8pm Eastern, 5pm Pacific.

Next Fruit Ninja details still unconfirmed - Halfbrick
Dec 5th 2011, 00:53

Studio reveals that development plans for its new Sydney branch are still being finalised, despite details of its new game being leaked by the NSW government; new studio is part of the state's A$3 million Interactive Media Fund.

Last month, Australian Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick detailed its plans to open a second development studio in Sydney, revealing that the new team would initially work on the Fruit Ninja franchise before possibly branching out and creating its own titles.

"The focus [of the new studio] remains to be seen," Halfbrick's marketing director, Phil Larsen, told GameSpot AU at the time. "At first, the new studio will just take on some Fruit Ninja work...different games we could be making, additions to current games, etc. We're also looking to get the new studio to branch out and start its own titles. We like to let all the teams have creative control."

The details of the new studio's projects still remain unconfirmed, despite the NSW government's announcement today that Halfbrick is planning a new instalment in the Fruit Ninja franchise to be developed by the Sydney branch.

The announcement was made by NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, who revealed that Halfbrick's new studio comes as part of the state's A$3 million Interactive Media Fund. In a press statement, Stoner described Halfbrick's new project as "the next evolution of the Fruit Ninja games franchise":

"The new Sydney team will develop the next evolution of the Fruit Ninja games franchise. The new game will involve players launching a series of fruit to knock ninjas off their towers in a 3D world, with each fruit having special powers. The game, due out in 2012, will initially be developed for Apple's iOS mobile operating system, but will later be provided for other platforms, including Android."

But according to Halfbrick, no such project yet exists. At the moment, all that is confirmed is that the Sydney branch will work on some aspect of the Fruit Ninja franchise.

"At this stage, we are beginning the prototyping phase of our Sydney-based Fruit Ninja project, and all gameplay details are still completely unconfirmed," Larsen told GameSpot AU today.

"We'll be making something new, and it will be a great addition to our Fruit Ninja franchise, but the game could definitely take many different directions--the team is just getting started, and game development is a long and complicated road! Very early days, so the only official word from Halfbrick is that it will be Fruit Ninja, and it will be awesome. We will have more to share in 2012."

The Interactive Media Fund--formerly the Digital Media Initiative--is a scheme that supports the creation of new digital content designed for commercially oriented projects with a renewed focus on interactive content. Stoner said the fund will support creative digital content, including games and transmedia projects, over the next two years.

"This fund will help NSW build its share of the high-value digital games sector, which will be increasingly important in developing serious business and education tools, as well as entertainment games, like the latest Fruit Ninja project."

Although Halfbrick has been around for 10 years, the critical and commercial success of Fruit Ninja--which was also launched on Microsoft's Kinect platform in August--put the studio in the spotlight, leading it to expand its operations.

Fruit Ninja recently surpassed over 100 million downloads across all mobile platforms; Fruit Ninja Kinect is currently sitting at 25,000 downloads.

Day 1 Studios loses Konami publishing deal
Dec 2nd 2011, 22:45

[UPDATE] Chicago-based developer lays off 95% of staff working on Konami's Silent Scope reboot; second, significantly smaller team trudges on.

[CORRECTION:] This story originally reported that Day 1 Studios had laid off approximately 95 percent of its staff. GameSpot's source has clarified this information, saying the 95 percent figure pertains to the Silent Scope team, and not the entire studio. A significantly smaller team remains at work on a second in-development project.

The original story can be found below.

The sun has set on Day 1 Studios. Today, GameSpot learned that the company has laid off approximately 100 employees--or 95 percent of its staff--as it winds down operations in preparation for closure.

A source told GameSpot that the Chicago-based studio's collapse came as a result of losing its publishing deal with Japanese publisher Konami. Day 1 had been at work on a new installment in Konami's classic arcade shooter Silent Scope, a franchise that has not seen a new installment since 2002's Silent Scope 3 for the PlayStation 2.

Day 1 was founded in 2001 by ex-FASA Interactive veteran Denny Thorley and Microsoft Game Studios' TJ Wagner. Out of the gate, the studio scored a hit with 2002's MechAssault for the original Xbox. After a MechAssault follow-up in 2004, the studio created the original property Fracture for LucasArts and then took over for Monolith on Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 3.

Neither Day 1 Studios nor Konami had returned GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.
