PlayStation 3 | Tokitowa: The RPG That Hearkens Back To 2D/3D Days Of Yore
Jan 30th 2012, 02:32

Image Epoch's latest action RPG aims to blend the best of anime and games with a twist of monogamy.

As we saw time and time again in PlayStation-era RPGs, mixing 2D sprite animation with 3D graphics can have mixed results. Developer Image Epoch knew that such an experiment would be risky, but the company that made Arc Rise Fantasia and the Luminous Arc series decided to say "screw it" and go for gold with Tokitowa, a game that claims to be an anime in video game motion.

As was evident from the Image Epoch webcast hosted by CEO Ryoei Mikage and producer Kei Hirano, Tokitowa is an action RPG for the PS3 centered on a blue-haired protagonist (which we would control) and his wife, a pink-haired girl named Toki. The key themes of the game's narrative are time and the bonds of marriage.

From the tiny clips of gameplay shown during the teaser, we can assume that Toki is a ranged character who uses her flying dragon pet as a combat assist. We didn't see any sign of the main protagonist in action, so we can't gauge whether players will have a two-person party or just tag in the other during combat.

What was also apparent was that every character and enemy will be in motion via traditional hand-drawn animation. Animation studio Satelight (Macross Frontier) and illustrator Vofan (Bakemonogatari) handles the entire game's 2D art and look, while Yuzo Koshiro is responsible for the game's music. Speaking of characters, the teaser also showed other female members of the cast, ranging from a bespectacled brunette who may be an outdoor alchemist, to a blonde doppelganger of Toki.

What was interesting, was that Mikage joked that players can cheat on the main character's wife, and instead find another person to marry and date instead. Whether the extra glimpse of the cast means they're potential party members or spouses is still open to interpretation, but the possibilities make for something akin to a faithfulness meta-test (like Catherine did last year).

While we aren't fully convinced that what we saw would translate into a smooth gameplay experience, Mikage did state that the game is only 20 percent done and will be ready for display in time for this year's Tokyo Game Show. That said, the brief clips demonstrated the high-quality animation blending in very well with its background.

If all goes to plan, gamers can check out what could be a pleasing marriage between traditional animation and gameplay when Tokitowa is out on Japan shelves this year.

The Binding of Isaac nearing 450,000 downloads
Jan 30th 2012, 19:05

Super Meat Boy designer's $5 shoot-'em-up closing in on half-platinum status; developer calls tally "absurd."

Selling half a million copies is no little feat for any game, even for some with high staff counts. But for Edmund McMillen's Binding of Isaac, reaching that figure is nearly a reality, and he's done it with minimal headcount.

In an interview with industry news site Gamasutra, McMillen (who co-created Super Meat Boy) revealed that The Binding of Isaac has sold nearly 450,000 units since its debut last September.

"It's pretty absurd," he said. "It's just ridiculous, there's no reason for this game to have done well. It's nice for everyone involved."

Talking about the game's initial release, McMillen said, "I came to the conclusion that I'd put it up for $5, and if people don't like it they don't have to buy it. Then it just f**king blew up. I didn't know, I didn't expect it."

The Binding of Isaac is a genre-twisting downloadable game that has players controlling a child named Isaac who must escape the clutches of his mother, who is trying to kill him. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of The Binding of Isaac.

Sony will be last to announce with PS4
Jan 30th 2012, 18:32

Next PlayStation unveiling not expected until after Microsoft has tipped its hand with the next Xbox, according to French magazine's interview with SCEE executive.

The next-gen rumor mill has been working overtime this year, but the proliferation of purported leaks doesn't necessarily mean official announcements are just around the corner. In an interview with French news magazine Le Point.fr, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe executive Phillipe Cardon said he expects the company to be the last to announce its next-gen console.

In the interview, Cardon noted that Sony was the last system to launch this generation with the PlayStation 3. (The PS3 preceded the Wii's November 2006 launch in the US by a week, but the system was the last to debut in Europe, arriving in March of 2007.) While the Wii has seen its sales declining recently, Cardon said there was a lot less pressure on Sony to move its focus to the next generation.

In another recent Le Point.fr interview, Microsoft's French marketing manager told the magazine the successor to the Xbox 360 won't hit stores this year. While he didn't guarantee the year would pass without an announcement of new hardware, the executive said there was considerable life left in the Xbox 360, noting there was still room for more price cuts on the system.

No new Xbox in 2012 - Microsoft
Jan 30th 2012, 17:51

Company's French marketing manager says Microsoft not ready to roll out new console this year, won't compete with Nintendo and the Wii U.

Microsoft won't release a new console in 2012. That's according to the company's French marketing manager, who recently told French website Le Point that Microsoft has no plans to compete with Nintendo and the Wii U this holiday season.

"What is certain is that there will be nothing new in 2012," Microsoft's Cedrick Delmas told the website (via Google Translate). Previous speculation pointed to Microsoft releasing a new console as early as this holiday.

Delmas added that, "The cycle of the Xbox 360 is by no means complete," noting the lack of price cuts for the system indicates Microsoft isn't ready to bring on the next console.

The marketing man also discussed Microsoft's position relative to Nintendo and the Wii U, which will be on-hand at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, and will launch worldwide by year's end.

"We are not here to deal with Nintendo and they are not there to fight against other manufacturers," he said. "Nintendo has placed itself in a different cycle, they advance at their own pace, successfully as we have seen with the Wii, and now it is their turn to present their innovation."

As for the form and functionality of Microsoft's not-yet-announced console, the latest scuttlebutt suggests it will play Blu-ray discs and sport measures to block used games.

2K Marin has new IP in the works - Resume
Jan 30th 2012, 17:02

BioShock 2, XCOM studio incubating new title, according to listing on employee's 2011-dated resume.

2K Marin is presently at work on breathing new life into the XCOM series in the form of a first-person shooter of the same name. However, that might not be the only project the Novato, California-based company is at work on.

As spotted by Internet information hound Superannuation, a 2K Marin employee's resume lists an "unannounced title" in the works at the BioShock 2 studio.

Further information about the game was not provided, but the resume notes a team of five were working to build "world prototypes" and pitch them to higher-ups.

Of note, the resume was most recently updated in 2011, and 2K Marin still has its hands full finishing up work on XCOM. That game is due for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC during parent publisher Take-Two's upcoming financial year, which runs from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013.

Star Wars: The Old Republic denounced for gay relationships
Jan 30th 2012, 18:46

Family Research Council says BioWare has "gone to the dark side" with promise to include same-gender romance in MMO.

BioWare hasn't shied away from same-sex relationships in its role-playing games in the past, having previously factored homosexuality into its Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises. In September, BioWare confirmed that this stance would extend to Star Wars: The Old Republic as well, and it's a decision the Family Research Council is just now taking issue with.

In a statement posted to Family Research Council's official website, organization president Tony Perkins condemn BioWare's intention to include homosexuality in SW:TOR.

"In a galaxy not so far far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side," Perkins wrote. "The new video game, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has added a special feature: gay relationships. BioWare, the company that developed the game, said it's launching a same-sex romance component to satisfy some complaints."

Perkins assessment of the matter isn't quite accurate. According to BioWare's official announcement in September, which was repeated in a recent forum post, the company intends to implement same-gender romance options at an unspecified future date. The company said that it did not include these options initially due to "design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size."

"Because The Old Republic is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options," the statement reads.

The Family Research Council is a conservative lobbying organization based in Washington, DC. It was formed in 1983 by evangelical Christian leader James Dobson.

EA had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
