John Carmack Rages on at QuakeCon
Aug 5th 2011, 01:22

QuakeCon 2011: id's technical guru gives QuakeCon a peek under the hood of Rage in opening-day keynote; Doom 3 source code release coming this year.

Who was there: The co-founder and technical director for id Software, John Carmack, once again delivered the keynote address at this year's QuakeCon 2011 convention.

What he talked about: Carmack was very excited to finally talk in-depth about the development of Rage, the upcoming post-apocalyptic first-person shooter from the creators of Quake and Doom. "Rage is the most enjoyable id game we've ever made," he stated, adding that id attempted to distill everything that was iconic about their classic titles and adapt it for this new project--with some additions added in along the way. The end result has been several years in the making, but Carmack feels it was worth it. "We hit everything we really set out to do with this game."

One of these objectives was to design a beautifully detailed game that would still look great across the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The designers wanted strict guidelines as to how large and how detailed they could make this world, Carmack said, but as a programmer this is a really hard rule to set. He added that there are so many different variables between platforms, and even between sections of the game, that this was almost impossible to set. In the end, he told the designers, "I want to be pushed a bit," and gave them some extra leeway to work with. With a smile, he added that this was probably "a bad call."

The were many other trials and tribulations that crept up when working across three platforms. Carmack noted that it was frustrating at times knowing that the PC held nearly 10 times the power of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but that he couldn't use it. However, he also added that developing on the two consoles was simpler given their specifically defined hardware. "We were really using the PC as a muscular console [during development]," he added.

Every game that has come out of id has taken longer than the one before, Carmack said, and this is a problem. With that in mind, he went on to explain that, instead of putting all of their efforts behind working with the bleeding edge of technology, the focus should be on improving the programming code and technology id already has. "What we need to do next as game developers is start cranking the knobs that already exists," he said, "such as improving anti-aliasing, filtering, and texture density."

There is also value in working within limitations, Carmack added, and one can learn things about efficiency when working under those conditions. If he had the time, Carmack said he would love to revisit the original PlayStation, or event the Atari 2600, and try coding a game for that platform just to see how it differed from today's standards.

He moved next to static code analysis tools as another great way to improve upon what a developer already has. These tool sets allow him and his team to analyze the thousands of lines of code they've written and quickly identify recurring problems. He noted that as developers add functionality to an established code base, things will break. This could be for a number of reasons, such as coding mistakes or shortcuts. The important thing is correcting these issues to build a more stable code base for the future.

Before opening the floor up for an extensive Q&A session, Carmack quickly noted that the source code for Doom 3 will finally be released before the year is out. He also urged other companies release the source codes for their older games as well. Doing so would only help encourage the development of future coders in the video game industry. On the same topic, he also lamented the fact that most members of the mod community won't be able to make the most out of Rage's toolset given its complexity and the sheer size and scope of the software.

The floor was then opened up for Q&A. As part of that discussion, Carmack lamented the fact that id can't devote much attention to the Mac, Lynx, and Android platforms. This was attributed to a simple lack of manpower on the developer's side. He also talked briefly about the status of Quake Live, which "has not been a business success," blaming the implosion of most in-game advertising agencies which were going to be the game's primary source of income. "[Quake Live] is not terribly expensive to keep up and running," Carmack added, "we just don't know how to promote it now."

Quote: "I get asked a lot if I miss the old days with the smaller teams and I tell people that I'm a remarkably unsentimental person; the best times are right now."--John Carmack on life.

Takeaway: Building a game to work on three very different platforms was certainly a challenge for the venerable developer. However, despite all the time it took, Carmack seemed confident in both the game's quality and in the lessons he and his team learned along the way. Their new goal is a faster development cycle that makes the most out of all the tools they've built over the years.

PlayStation Vita not hitting US, Europe until 2012
Aug 4th 2011, 15:05

Gamers' hopes may have been bolstered by recent rumors that Sony's PlayStation Vita would be making its North American and European debuts this year, but Sony executive deputy president Kaz Hirai put an end to that today.

According to an Associated Press report, Hirai told reporters today that the PS Vita will not be ready for its international rollout this year. Instead, Sony is planning to launch the system in Japan later this year, with North American and European debuts to follow in early 2012. Previously, Sony had simply said the PS Vita would "successively launch in [the] global market starting [at] the end of 2011."

When it launches, the PS Vita will come in two different retail configurations: a high-speed 3G model and a Wi-Fi-only model. The top-end 3G model, which boasts a mobile broadband connection, will cost $299 (¥29,980, €299). The Wi-Fi model will cost $249 (¥24,980, €249). While Nintendo recently slashed the price of its own 3DS, Hirai said Sony would be standing firm on the PS Vita price point.

"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

Check out GameSpot's full rundown of the Vita for more on what to expect from the handheld.

Vindictus Update Offers New Raid Bosses, Skills and a New Dungeon
Aug 4th 2011, 05:19

Nexon has released the Unveiling the Truth content update for Vindictus, the award-winning physics-based action MMORPG. Today, mercenaries find out the true motive behind the rebellion at Ortel castle and come face to face with unimaginable threats. The content ushers in two fearsome new raid bosses, a new dungeon, new player skill advancements and more.

Players are now able to explore the dark corridors of the Ainle Catacombs, home to the Succubus, mistress of seduction. She lies in wait to ensnare any unwitting mercenary, along with the demonic colossal Glas Ghaibhleann. In contrast to the beautiful and seductive Succubus, Glas is one ugly creature, and stands ready to tear foolish warriors limb from limb. These raid encounters will be the deadliest players have ever experienced, and a wise adventurer will work together with comrades for victory.

Mercenaries won’t have to face these encounters ill equipped. New tools of destruction are now available, just in time to help combat the Succubus, Glas and their fiendish hordes of minions. Certain existing skills have also been raised from Rank A to Rank 6 for added effectiveness in battle.

Unveiling the Truth also brings improvements to the in-game chat system to make it easier for players to communicate exactly how they want. Players now have the option to detach the chat window, block unwanted chatter, change chat font sizes and also include emoticons in their chats to other players.

The new update is currently live and can be downloaded for free at:www.vindictus.com.

“Adding time to our schedule will help us ensure we exceed people’s expectations for TERA,” said Chris Lee, publishing VP of En Masse Entertainment. “The game’s action combat and depth has generated a lot of interest, and we are committed to making sure every aspect of the game lives up to our standard of quality.”

Microsoft calling up Iron Brigade?
Aug 3rd 2011, 21:07

Xbox 360 maker files trademark application with USPTO for term associated only with "computer game software."

At last year's Tokyo Game Show, Capcom confirmed that it would be reprising its Steel Battalion mech combat franchise on Microsoft's gaming console, swapping out the original's 40-button controller for Kinect support. Now, it appears as if Steel Battalion may be joined on the Xbox 360 by a new game titled Iron Brigade.

This week, a trademark application for the term "Iron Brigade" surfaced in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database. Microsoft initially filed for the mark on July 26.

While many trademark applications list any number of possible uses for the name, Microsoft's filing leaves little room for interpretation. "Computer game software" is all that Microsoft has listed for how the mark will be used.

Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment as of press time. However, it may be worth noting that during Microsoft's recently concluded fiscal year, the company increased its R&D spend by 12 percent to $119 million.

Diablo III still targeted for 2011
Aug 3rd 2011, 21:33

While Activision has been up front with investors about the possibility of 2011 ending without a single release from Blizzard, the Diablo III developer is still holding out hope to celebrate at least one launch this year.

Speaking in an Activision post-earnings conference call today, Blizzard's Mike Morhaime said the company is working hard to get the game on store shelves by the end of this year. However, he also noted that it was still too early to commit to that release window, and Activision's own guidance for the year specifically noted that it did not include any Blizzard releases.

"There are a lot of moving parts in putting out a complex release like Diablo III," Morhaime said, noting that the recently announced real-money auction house hasn't been tested in beta yet. That beta is expected to begin by the end of September.

Morhaime also talked about the Diablo III business model. While the auction house will provide a new way for the company to pull revenues from the game, Morhaime said he expects Diablo III to follow a traditional boxed retail product model, with a primary product on shelves and subsequent expansions offered for sale.
