Modern Warfare 3 tops gamer holiday wish list - Nielsen
Sep 30th 2011, 15:51

This holiday season sees the release of numerous high-profile titles, and according to tracking firm Nielsen, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the most wanted game of all.

Nielsen recently published its "Top 20 Games to Watch" and the Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games-developed shooter topped all others by a significant margin. According to Nielsen, 27 percent of respondents designated Modern Warfare 3 as one of the top five titles they intend to purchase during the 2011 holiday season.

The next two most coveted games of the season, based on Nielsen's data, are the recently released Gears of War 3 and August's Madden NFL 12. Both games found their way onto 19 percent of respondents' lists.

Just one title on the list--Dead Island--is a new intellectual property. All others are either sequels or extensions of existing franchises.

Other games making the list include forthcoming titles Assassin's Creed: Revelations (17 percent), Batman: Arkham City (15 percent), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (14 percent), and Battlefield 3 (12 percent).

Nielsen's online survey of what it calls "active gamers," was conducted from August 21 to September 17 of this year. Supplemental information was provided by Nielsen company NM Incite, which mined more than 417 million online conversations about the top 20 games to determine the top factors for hype.

According to NM Incite, Modern Warfare 3 conversations tended to be centered around launch parties, changes to the game, a "darker mood," and the difference between the Hardened version and its standard counterpart. Gamers excited about Assassin's Creed: Revelations are interested in the game's multiplayer component. Further, based on the firm's findings, gamers enthusiastic about Batman: Arkham City are interested in finding out which villains they will face.

For more on the study and what drove the online conversations regarding games on the list, check out Nielsen's official blog.

Square Enix to hold NIER music concert
Sep 30th 2011, 07:28

By Jonathan Leo Toyad, GameSpot AsiaPosted Sep 30, 2011 12:28 am PT

SQ Party Level2 NIER NighT - Evening of Madness event to be held on October 28.

The Square Enix published and Cavia-developed RPG NIER may have received average reviews, but the game's soundtrack was still considered a high point by many players. Square Enix has already recognized the popularity of the soundtrack, releasing different arrangements of the game's music. Now the publisher is taking NIER's music on the road, announcing a musical concert in Japan featuring tunes from the action-RPG.

According to the Twitter feed of the game's producer Yosuke Saito (who is currently producing Dragon Quest X), the concert is called the "SQ Party LEVEL 2 NIER Night - Evening of Madness" and will be held on October 28. Featured artists include Go-qualia and World's End Girlfriend, both of whom have performed on the recent NIER Tribute Album. Details on the venue and ticket pricing will be disclosed on the concert's website shortly.

Apart from its soundtrack, NIER was praised for including varied elements from different genres of games, but was criticized for being an unfocused RPG that was less than the sum of its parts. The game's music was also nominated for Best Original Music in GameSpot's Best of 2010 feature.

Aussie emulation mash-up Sept. 30
Sep 30th 2011, 07:32

Aussie developer Nnooo unleashed their latest game onto the WiiWare store this week with escapeVektor: Chapter 1. The premise here is pretty simple: guide Vektor through a series of interconnected lines while trying not to get taken out by enemies. The game features over 30 levels, and has its own achievements system built-in for those who pride themselves on digital badges.

The other big game releasing on a Nintendo platform this week is The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition. Regardless of what flavour Nintendo DS console you have, if you can access the DSiWare store in it then you can download the game for free! Four Swords was the first game in the Zelda franchise to feature multiplayer support and this re-release has been upgraded so that it's playable over Wi-Fi. Be sure to check out our original review of the game for more information.

Both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network Store share Mercury HG this week, which is a little puzzler that sees players navigating a blob through a series of mazes. The Mercury series started off life as a PSP franchise, but has since been released for the Wii and now on high-def consoles as well.

Mercury HG is about where the similarities ends, with Worms Ultimate Mayhem releasing on XBLA, and the PSN updating with Rochard, Elemental Monster, and a few other indie games.

Saboteur and The A-Team - Secret Identities or Just the Same Atari 2600 Game?
Sep 30th 2011, 01:25

A-Team and Saboteur - Separated at Birth?I've been thinking, you never see the rare Atari 2600 classics Saboteur and The A-Team in the same room at the same time. It's almost like Saboteur is the secret identity to the ultra weird video game, The A-Team. It is as though they were the exact same game just in different outfits.

Sure both of the titles were developed in the same year by the man behind Yars' Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and sure both titles ended up getting canceled due to the video game industry crash of 1983, and it sure is convenient that they were both unearthed due to leaked prototype carriages.

So I decided to investigate my suspicions, seek out these two games and confront them on their double lives. What I discovered will blow your mind with Atari 2600 Weirdess.

Persona 4 animated series licensed for US release
Sep 30th 2011, 01:56

Earlier this year, Japanese animation company Aniplex announced that an anime series based on the PS2 RPG Persona 4 was in production, and was scheduled to air on October 6 in Japan. English-speaking fans can now celebrate, with Sentai Filmworks confirming that it will be licensing the anime for release in the US market.

According to a recent press release from the company's website, the 25-episode series will be available on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012. The show will also be digitally distributed "soon through many outlets". No specific release window was given at this point in time.

Just like the game it is based upon, the story follows main character Yu Narukami as he joins up with eight other teenagers to solve the mysterious murders and kidnappings in the town of Inaba. The show will be directed by Seiji Kishi (director of Angel Beats!) and the soundtrack will be composed by Shoji Meguro (composer for the recent Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series).

The Persona 4 brand isn't just getting an anime adaptation; there is also an upcoming fighting game based on the series that take place two years after the original game's story. The 2D fighter is being developed by Arc System Works; check out GameSpot's preview of the title. A PlayStation Vita port of the original PS2 title will also be released next spring in Japan. The title will have more in-game voice work, as well as new animated cutscenes and wireless support features.

Xbox 360 getting Comcast, Verizon TV - Report
Sep 30th 2011, 00:19

The Xbox 360 already plays host to services like Netflix and Hulu, but Microsoft is reportedly looking to ramp up the content offerings on its Xbox Live service in a big way. Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is in talks with nearly two media providers to stream their music, sports, TV programs, and movies on Xbox Live "as soon as next week."

Two of the biggest names Microsoft has plans for are Comcast and Verizon, both of which will reportedly have their pay television services--Xfinity and Verizon FiOS, respectively--added to Xbox Live. However, users would need to be existing customers of the standard version of those services in order to add the Xbox 360 capability.

Bloomberg names a number of Microsoft's potential partners, including HBO, Bravo, SyFy Channel, Sony Pictures' Crackle streaming service, and Amazon's Lovefilm UK. Representatives with the various companies did not provide comment to Bloomberg. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Xbox 360 | Voltron: Defenders of the Universe First Look Preview
Sep 30th 2011, 04:03

Children of the 1980s, brace for impact! Your memories and disposable income have become flashing, high-value targets for film and game companies looking to sell you back your fondest moments. What's old is new again, and if you grew up with cartoons filled with giant robots or little blue singing creatures, only to feel pangs in their absence in your adulthood, then relish (or balk at) the chance of revival. Amazingly, while publishers were pumping out games tied to just about every hit TV show and film, Voltron didn't ever get the game treatment in its heyday. As a result, this downloadable title is a chance to right history's failings, and is being made by Voltron fans (who also happen to be developers) for Voltron fans.

Don't worry if you're too young to have caught the program the first time, as the game includes a recap of the characters and how they fit together. These flashbacks are done with original clips from the show and bookend gameplay. Even the menus include blasts of the original theme music, and have been extended beyond short samples that were never designed for lengthy play.

You'll be able to play the game solo if you want to, but the real fun of being part of a giant transforming robot gang is the chance to buddy up, play through the campaign, and combine your powers. Two players battled alongside each other on the same console during our demo, but five players will be able to team up online, each taking control of one of the pieces of the robot puzzle, and channelling their collective energies into a single unified attack to defeat evil forces.

Gameplay variety was clearly one of the major design goals, and rather than picking a single play style and sticking with it throughout the story, the game will be split into several different modes with roots in the show. Arus one: Bulwark was a twin-stick isometric brawler level set in a lush jungle environment where, with the pull of the trigger, our cats lunged at targets, clawing at eyes and earning valuable points. Yellow and red rely on melee swipes and pounces to take down anything within striking range, while blue and green lions are ranged units. Commander Keith, black lion, leader of the group, and the torso of the robot, is a balanced all-rounder.

The Arus four mission was taken straight from the fiction, pitting us against the Robeast in a turn-based combat scenario where we traded damage. One player controlled the intensity of a laser attack, or the swing of our sword, while the other would aim it at the enemy's weak spots.

The last level shown was a top-down space shooter with bullet hell elements, and it gave us a good look at the special attack system. Star pieces are the game's currency, and are collected in groups of five. Once you've collected enough, you're able to either trade them in for an extra life, or spend them individually for temporary boosts and special attacks unique to each character. Every lion has its own elemental attack, and, when activated, yellow released a swirling cyclone that engulfed enemies that were close enough to be caught. If you're unlucky enough to drain your life bar, you'll be given one extra chance at redemption. Provided you can survive on foot outside of your ship for 10 seconds while repairs go on, you'll be able to jump back in without the penalty of a lost life, and continue the fight.

The devil is in the details, and the smallest touches here show that this is a passion project from lifetime series devotees. Tapping the pause button midgame triggers an audio sample of "Voltron will be back after these messages!" just like the show did when cutting to a commercial.

It's authentic and nostalgic, and while we didn't have a chance to put the controller in-hand ourselves, we're eager to relive the memories when Voltron: Defenders of the Universe is released later this year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network.
