Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm brings Kerrigan to the fore
Oct 21st 2011, 22:25

ANAHEIM, CA--At the BlizzCon 2011 opening ceremony this morning, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime promised that this year's event would have new offerings for all of its big three franchises. As it pertained to Starcraft II, those announcements equate to a first look at Heart of the Swarm's new multiplayer content, as well as a look at the single-player campaign for the real-time strategy game. That single-player information came as part of a mid-Friday panel devoted to Starcraft II's campaign and lore, which featured Blizzard's senior VP of story and franchise development Chris Metzen, lead writer Brian Kindregan, and lead level designer Matt Morris.

Kindregan led off, saying that he didn't want to spoil anything that will be in the game. Therefore, the team didn't have much by way of specifics on how Heart of the Swarm would continue the storyline from Wings of Liberty. However, Kindregan did provide brief overviews of some of the primary players, beginning with perhaps the most interesting of all, Kerrigan. She still has the dreadlocks, he said, which indicates she's not entirely back to human. Kerrigan also doesn't remember all that she did as the Queen of Blades, he said, but she remembers some of the awful deeds, and it's weighing heavily on her.

The Protoss Zeratul has essentially gone rogue, he continued, saying that he is on the hunt to prove an intergalactic conspiracy. Meanwhile, Izsha is a new character that was created by the Queen of Blades as a memory depository of sorts, and therefore, she serves Kerrigan now. (Amanda Haley, who was in a Starcraft short story.) Abathur is another unique Zerg created by the Queen of Blades and now under Kerrigan's control. His role is to evolve the swarm, and the way he does this is to eat parts of creatures to assimilate their desirable properties.

Not all the Zerg are on Kerrigan's side, though. One such is Za'Gara, a brood mother. Brood mothers are a new unit to Heart of the Swarm and were created by the Queen of Blades just before her reversion to Kerrigan. Za'Gara, like many other brood mothers, doubts that Kerrigan used to be the Queen of Blades. And because the brood mothers are sentient creatures that can control an entire brood, they have independence and ambition and all want to be the next leader of the Swarm.

There are many stories woven together in this game, Kindregan said. There is the overarching story of Kerrigan's attempt to regain control of the Swarm. There are also individual stories that are more personal. Ambient stories are also there, and they float in the background. However, of all these stories, he emphasized that the most important is Kerrigan's. She has done awful things and had awful things done to her, and she is an angry conflicted hero. She ultimately has to make peace with the Zerg Swarm, he concluded.

Morris then took the mic to talk about mission structures. He said that the Zerg campaign is much different from Wings of Liberty, most notably in that the Zerg's approach to the universe is much different from that of the Terrans and Jim Raynor. Specifically, when the Zerg arrive on the scene, it is a moment of terror, and the designers want players to feel like they are inspiring that horror. When players arrive on the planet, it is about wholesale death and destruction.

As an example, Morris described the Silence Their Cries mission. In this mission, Kerrigan has arrived at a planet, looking for one of her broods. However, upon arrival, she finds everything frozen, save for indigenous species. To unfreeze the brood, the Zerg force sets out to eat indigenous creatures to gain their freeze-protection aspect, and in doing so build up a freeze-resistance for the Swarm.

This type of evolution is core to gameplay, Morris said, as players will unlock and mutate various units as they progress. This is in contrast to the Terran campaign, where players had to buy their unit upgrades. There are three levels of evolution before a genetic split, he said. The genetic split lets players create all-new units. For instance, a zergling that has evolved can become a raptor, which is able to jump up and down from cliffs. Alternatively, zerglings can split into a swarmling, where three units spawn from a hatchling instead of two.

Portal 2 getting in-game editor
Oct 21st 2011, 19:54

In Portal 2, players were made to complete a series of devious and deadly tests constructed by the sadistic GLaDOS. Players will soon be able to put themselves in the AI antagonist metaphorical shoes, as developer Valve today announced that it is working on an in-game editor that will allow users to create and share their own single-player and cooperative mode test chambers. The update is set for release early next year.

The editor will be the second add-on for Portal, following up on the Peer Review update released earlier this month. That addition continued the cooperative adventures of multiplayer characters P-Body and Atlas, and featured a Challenge mode playable both in single-player and co-op, as well as leaderboard support. The Peer Review pack was released for free on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Valve did not specify a cost or platforms for the in-game editor update, and had not responded to GameSpot's request for clarification as of press time.

Portal 2--which has shipped 2 million units--is the continuation of the 2007 Orange Box pack-in Portal. The single-player portion of the new title continues the travails of human lab rat Chell, who in the original game used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs and thwart the diabolical GLaDOS.

Mists of Pandaria descending on World of Warcraft
Oct 21st 2011, 19:17

Blizzard Entertainment greeted an electrified crowd on Friday morning to welcome Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo fans to Anaheim. The event, which as in years past takes place a stone's throw from Disneyland, has hundreds of characters of its own--some in costume, some not so much. But before the festivities begin, the opening ceremony must commence. And unlike at last year's BlizzCon opening ceremonies, Blizzard had several announcements of substance.

First and foremost, Blizzard creative director Chris Metzen confirmed the name of World of Warcraft's next expansion: Mists of Pandaria. Featuring a vaguely Asian theme, the expansion pack is set on the new continent of Pandaria, introducing the Pandaren as well as the monk player class. The expansion pack, which was not dated, will also increase the player level cap to 90. Metzen also confirmed that there will be no other race introduced with this expansion.

To preface the game's reveal, Metzen said that as opposed to previous expansions, where the Alliance and Horde needed to come together to face threats such as the Lich King or Deathwing, this expansion will focus on the conflict between the two factions.

"To give you a sense of what the next couple of years are going to do for WOW, at this time, the true villain is going to be war itself," he said. "Red and blue are about to get it on with a level of ferocity that hasn't been seen since Warcraft II. War is coming, and it's not going to be pretty, unless of course you're playing a blood elf. ... This next expansion set is set in a place that has been lost to time for close to 10,000 years. It is a land of balance, and harmony and hope, that is, until we arrive, with all of our hate, violence, and factional conflict."

World of Warcraft's next expansion wasn't the only announcement to come during the opening ceremony, as Diablo III also received its due in the form of a collector's-edition package. The special-edition box will include in-game items for Diablo III, WOW, and Starcraft II. Other perks include an exclusive art book and a 4GB USB drive in the shape of a Soulstone. The USB drive is mounted in a holder in the shape of Diablo's skull, and it comes preloaded with Diablo II.

Blizzard also had a surprise for WOW players, announcing the WOW Annual Pass. Those who sign up for a 12-month subscription through the company's website (as of today), will be granted a free digital edition of Diablo III. The WOW Annual Pass also grants players a guaranteed slot in the aforementioned new World of Warcraft expansion when it goes live, as well as a Tyrael's Charger in-game mount.

According to Metzen, the Diablo III team has been voraciously gathering data from the game's beta-testing phase, and the game itself is "in the home stretch." However, he reiterated that the game will be done when it's done.

Beyond the headline announcements, Blizzard also offered a few bits on the year, and this year's show in particular. Notably, BlizzCon 2011 counts 26,000 people in attendance, with showgoers hailing from all 50 states as well as 48 different countries.

[CORRECTION]: This story originally reported Blizzard was still aiming for a 2011 release date for Diablo III. The company officially bumped the game's launch window to early 2012 last month.

Starhawk private beta starts next month
Oct 21st 2011, 21:00

First word of a Starhawk beta hit last week with the reveal that retail copies of Uncharted 3 will include a voucher for access to the game's public beta, slated for early 2012. For those who don't want to wait, a more limited beta is set to begin next month.

President of Lightbox Interactive Dylan Jobe announced today on the PlayStation blog that a private beta will begin in November. Selected players will be admitted in waves, with eligibility determined by rank/level in Warhawk, involvement in the Warhawk community, and "a few other magical parameters." Beta invites will start going out soon.

Taking a sci-fi Western approach, Starhawk is a successor to 2007's PSN downloadable third-person shooter Warhawk. Unlike its predecessor, Lightbox Interactive's Starhawk will include a single-player campaign in addition to its multiplayer component. A new mechanic to the series will allow on-the-fly building of structures on the battlefield, and the jetlike hawks return to join a host of other vehicles, including mechs and jeeps.

Warner to distribute The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360
Oct 21st 2011, 19:33

Atari, Namco Bandai, and THQ have already had a hand in bringing CD Projekt's The Witcher 2 to the masses, and now another name can be added to the project. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today that it will be handling North American distribution duties for the Xbox 360 edition of the game, with a launch window set for Q1 2012.

The news comes during a period of unsettled litigation between CD Projekt and the PC version's European publisher Namco Bandai. The publisher alleged an initial contractual violation when the developer released a downloadable version of the game free of digital rights management through its own online storefront, Good Old Games. A second breach was claimed to have occurred when CD Projekt signed a distribution deal with THQ to bring the game out in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to CD Projekt's original and picks back up with professional monster slayer Geralt following a failed assassination of Temerian royalty. Geralt then sets out on a quest to track down the king's attempted killers, while also continuing to pursue those responsible for murdering other witchers. The PC edition received a 2.0 update last month, adding an arena mode, extended tutorials, a harder difficulty setting, and various other updates, all of which will be included in the Xbox 360 version.
