NBA Live will return in 2012
Feb 23rd 2012, 21:05

EA Sports confirms pro basketball sim hiatus ends this year with announcement of NBA Live 13.

It appears as if the NBA Live lockout is over. Today, EA Sports confirmed that production is under way on NBA Live 13 by tweeting a picture of the Cleveland Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving playing the game. Additional details on NBA Live 13 were not revealed.

EA Sports' professional basketball sim franchise has been dormant since NBA Live 10 was launched in 2009. Following that game's release, EA announced in 2010 that it planned to reboot the franchise with NBA Elite 11. Built around a more "hands-on control" scheme than its NBA Live predecessors, NBA Elite 11 was to emphasize player movement and skill-based shooting.

However, when that game's October 2010 launch window came and went, EA Sports confirmed that it scuttled the game and handed the franchise off to its EA Tiburon studio, better known as the home of Madden NFL. In 2011, the only basketball game EA ended up releasing was the arcade-style NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.

EA's absence from the pro NBA sim genre has proven to be a boon for competitor 2K Sports. Both NBA 2K11 and NBA 2K12 had franchise-best years, topping the 4 million unit sales mark.

Sony explains lack of UMD-to-Vita transfer
Feb 23rd 2012, 21:01

SCE Worldwide Studios president says lack of demand, cheap price for downloadable PSP games in North America kept Sony from offering trade-in program internationally.

Twice now, Sony has teased the possibility for PSP gamers to convert their UMD-based titles to play on digital-friendly systems like the PSP Go and PlayStation Vita, and twice now, Sony has failed to deliver. In a recent interview with Wired, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained why a Japanese conversion program for the electronics giant's newly released PS Vita isn't being offered to North American gamers.

Yoshida said there are two main reasons for the lack of such a program internationally. First, he said there was little demand for such a program outside of Japan, where the PSP still has plenty of new games being released on a regular basis. Second, he said downloadable PSP games in the US and Europe are cheap enough that offering the conversion program (with its $5-$10 fee per game converted) didn't make as much sense outside of Japan.

"You can buy Final Fantasy Tactics for $10," Yoshida said. "That's a great price. There are many, many games that are sold at an affordable price. When you compare that to the price of games here, PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get the digital copy. But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the US, we see less value in introducing that kind of system. The combination of the new titles available, or the lack of, and the price difference...the company decided to do that."

A full list of PSP downloadable games compatible with the PS Vita is available on the official PlayStation Blog.

EA Tiburon vets form PixelFoundry, reveal first game
Feb 23rd 2012, 21:07

Volga Aksoy and Jerry Phaneuf heading up new game company working on PC real-time strategy game BlackSpace.

Two former EA Tiburon developers are turning in golf courses for space ships.

Ex-EA Tiburon developers Volga Aksoy and Jerry Phaneuf have founded PixelFoundry and currently make up the two-man shop as technical lead and creative lead, respectively.

The studio is presently at work on PC real-time strategy game BlackSpace, which the developer says combines action with an "emphasis on economic and defensive efficiency." The game takes place on asteroids, and players will control a "low-gravity operation support vehicle" for a range of uses, including mining and defense.

PixelFoundry told GameSpot that depending on the reception of the PC version, it might expand to consoles at a later date. Additionally, the developer confirmed to GameSpot that it plans to develop social and mobile companion apps for BlackSpace, which are targeted to launch after the game does.

For more on PixelFoundry and BlackSpace, check out the developer's website.

Aksoy and Phaneuf are both 10-year industry veterans, who most recently held senior developer positions at EA Tiburon, where they worked on games from the Madden, Tiger Woods, NASCAR, and MMA franchises.

Jet Set Radio port teased for XBL, PSN
Feb 23rd 2012, 19:12

New video indicates Sega bringing 2000 Dreamcast game to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network; price, release date TBA.

It appears Sega is bringing 2000's Dreamcast action game Jet Set Radio to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

Sega dispatched a 22-second YouTube teaser video today (embedded below), indicating Jet Set Radio--known as Jet Grind Radio in North America--will be the latest Dreamcast title to be ported to Xbox Live and the PSN.

No mention was made as to a price or release date for Jet Set Radio.

The arrival of Jet Set Radio on Xbox Live and the PSN is part of Sega's effort to release Dreamcast titles on both platforms, as was announced in 2010. Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi were the first titles to release as part of the program.

Blizzard prepping new free-to-play game?
Feb 23rd 2012, 19:17

Develop source says company has unannounced freemium game on its hands, but official word points to Blizzard DOTA.

Source: UK gaming news site Develop reports Blizzard Entertainment is working on a new, unannounced free-to-play game.

What we heard: One reason cited as why Blizzard's World of Warcraft has been shedding subscribers at a steady clip in the last few months is the proliferation of high-quality free-to-play games. Now, if a report from Develop is to be believed, Blizzard is taking the join-them tack with an as-yet-unannounced project.

According to Develop's sources, the game company plans to implement a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported business model into an upcoming project. Develop then suggests that this project could be Blizzard's upcoming massively multiplayer online Project Titan, details for which remain largely under wraps.

The key word in Develop's report is "unannounced," mostly because Blizzard actually has an announced free-to-play project on its hands. At last year's BlizzCon, the company revealed the rebooted Blizzard DOTA, confirming that the title will join many other multiplayer online battle arena games by using a microtransaction-based business model.

So is this what Develop's source was talking about?

The official story: Probably. A Blizzard representative responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter with a set of links all pointing to the free-to-play plans for Blizzard DOTA.

Bogus or not bogus: Blizzard's response allows for a bit of wiggle room, but this one's looking bogus.

Guerrilla Games co-founder joins Dead Space dev
Feb 23rd 2012, 17:59

Arjan Brussee leaves Killzone studio for Visceral Games to be executive producer on unannounced project.

Guerrilla Games has lost one of its cofounders. According to Control Online (via VG247), Arjan Brussee has left the Amsterdam studio to join Dead Space developer Visceral Games.

Brussee will head to Visceral Games' office at the Electronic Arts campus in California, where he will serve as an executive producer on an unannounced project. Job listings at the developer have pointed to the new game being an online action shooter.

Brussee served as a senior developer on Killzone, Killzone: Liberation, Killzone 2, and Killzone 3. Before cofounding Guerrilla Games, Brussee most notably worked at Epic Games in the 1990s as a coder on platforming game Jazz Jackrabbit.

In a farewell email to Guerrilla Games employees (translated via Google), Brussee said he enjoyed his time at the developer and that he hopes to find new challenges at Visceral.

PS Vita sales to top 12.4 million with price cut - Research firm
Feb 23rd 2012, 19:12

Strategy Analytics expects Sony's handheld sales to start strong and quickly drop, projects $2.2 billion in sales if average price of system drops to $180.

The PlayStation Vita has barely been on shelves for a single day, but there's already talk of a price cut for the system. Research firm Strategy Analytics released a note today projecting that the PS Vita will sell 12.4 million units worldwide in 2012, "assuming a price cut sometime this year."

If Sony can get the average retail price of a PS Vita down to $180, the firm expects the system's hardware sales to reach $2.2 billion. Currently, the Wi-Fi model of the PS Vita sells for $250, while the 3G-enabled hardware goes for $300. The handheld's closest competitor, the 3DS, launched last year at a $250 price point, but Nintendo slashed that to $170 after initial sales proved disappointing.

Strategy Analytics pointed out that when the PS Vita launched in Japan in December, initial sales were strong. The system topped 300,000 units sold in its first week but has since dropped to as few as 12,000 units sold on a weekly basis. The firm believes that the system's North American and European sales totals will follow that pattern as well, the same strong start and quick decline experienced by the 3DS last year.

"Despite the solid design and strong processing power, it is challenging to convince consumers to buy a dedicated game console above the $200 price range in today’s economic environment as Nintendo has learnt," the firm said. "Sales of 3G models will be a particular challenge as it demands a $50 premium and additional data plan charges and in the long run is likely to represent only a small portion of total PlayStation Vita sales."
