ESPN Xbox Live update coming August 25
Jul 27th 2011, 20:02

Microsoft will be introducing split-screen for multi-cast games, mini-guide, and scoreboard with upcoming update to sports channel.

Microsoft didn't introduce any real game-changing improvements with last year's Xbox Live dashboard fall update. However, what it did bring to Gold subscribers was ESPN access, which let Xbox 360 owners watch live broadcasts and other recordings pulled from ESPN 3. Today, Gizmodo reports that the Xbox Live ESPN channel will be getting a major update on August 25.

One of the most notable improvements being made to the channel is that it will feature multi-cast support. Xbox Live users will be able to watch two games at once in 720p. Each broadcast will be controlled independently, so gamers will be able to, for instance, pause one game while the other continues unabated.

The update will also introduce a mini-guide feature, which displays thumbnails and scores of other watchable events at the bottom of the screen. The update will also introduce a scoreboard that scrolls down the right of the screen and offers live updates on in-progress and recently concluded games. Initially, this scoreboard will only be populated by college football results.

Gamers can interface with the ESPN channel on Xbox Live through either a standard gamepad or the Kinect's voice controls. A video demonstration can be found on Gizmodo's website.
