Origin surpasses 5 million daily users

EA's online service marks milestone in under five months; publisher aims to be almost completely digital in five years.

EA's downloadable storefront Origin has seen steady adoption numbers since its launch in June, and the publisher announced the service topped four million users in September. Speaking with Digital Life this week, EA COO Peter Moore delivered another update on the service's numbers, saying that just four-and-a-half months after release, Origin has surpassed 5 million daily users.

Services like Origin are a key to EA's future, said Moore. Likening the publisher to big service-based companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon, he sees EA moving away from a traditional packaged goods model.

"I think it will be a company that is almost completely digital," Moore told the site, "that has developed a very strong, viable and robust and value-driven consumer platform that allows us to be able to interact directly with tens, if not hundreds of millions of people that will talk to EA every day."

In a similar vein, Moore said that focusing on consumer engagement is becoming more important for the company than raw unit sales. Mobile platforms were also highlighted again as a key component to EA's future success.

Origin is likely to receive another registration boost this December with the release of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA's downloadable service is the exclusive digital distributor for the sci-fi massively multiplayer online game.
