Dead Island dev has plans for Dead World
Nov 3rd 2011, 18:09

Dead Island's chaos was confined to a tropical isle, but Techland wants its zombie outbreak to spread. In September, Lionsgate optioned the game's film rights, and last week, the developer filed a trademark for another possible project in the series.

Spotted by Siliconera, Techland has filed a US Patent and Trademark Office application for use of the name Dead World. The filing, dated October 28, would cover use of the term as it relates to digital media and entertainment/video game-related properties. The developer has not made any announcements regarding a potential Dead Island follow-up.

Dead Island proper was in development for more than five years, but Techland isn't done with it yet. A content pack titled Blood Arena was delayed in September, but Techland has since reallocated development resources to "further polishing" of the base game.

Set on a secluded resort, Dead Island tells the brutal story of everyday civilians caught up in a zombie apocalypse. Gamers can choose among four character classes, which break down into the leader, tank, jack-of-all-trades, and assassin archetypes. Every single character starts out the same way--suddenly attacked by zombies at the island's hotel, knocked out, and dragged to a nearby pool house converted to a shelter.
