Zelda: Skyword Sword getting gold controller bundle
Aug 29th 2011, 17:31

Nintendo today confirmed Zelda: Skyward Sword is going gold, but not in the way companies usually mean. Rather than announcing the completion of the game's development, Nintendo was revealing a limited edition bundle for the game that will include a gold-colored Wii Remote Plus.

Set for release November 20 alongside the standard edition of the game, the limited-edition controller bundle will sell for $70 instead of the standard version's $50. The gold controller was originally unveiled at Nintendo's E3 2011 press briefing, but it did not say at the time how gamers would be able to get their hands on one.

Regardless of which version gamers buy, they will still be getting an extra at launch. Nintendo has said every copy of the initial run of Skyward Sword will include a CD featuring orchestral arrangements of music pulled from the series' 25-year history.

Designed around Nintendo's Wii Remote Plus (or Wii Remote with MotionPlus accessory), Skyward Sword features a new combat system that approximates one-to-one controller-to-sword motion. Beyond giving Link new ways to cut up the usual assortment of carnivorous plants, disembodied eyeballs, and orcish monsters, the game features new gadgets and abilities for the lithe protagonist to employ.

Link can now roll bombs like bowling balls, channel his inner Indiana Jones with a whip attack, or retrieve hard-to-reach items with a remote-control flying beetle. Players will also get a new form of transportation, as Link will be able to ride a bird through the clouds to get from place to place.

Despite those tweaks, Skyward Sword will retain many of the distinctive traits of the series, including its standard breakdown between puzzle-laden dungeons and a sprawling overworld. Nintendo is touting Skyward Sword as "the biggest game in the series yet," with a story that serves as a prequel of sorts to the Nintendo 64 classic The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (recently remade for the 3DS).

Namco Bandai x Tecmo Koei reveal coming next week
Aug 29th 2011, 16:26

Countdown site for crossover project from makers of Tekken, Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, and Gundam goes live.

Corporate crossovers are all the rage lately. While Capcom has been particularly prolific in producing games with other companies (Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright), other publishers may have picked up a taste for working with the competition.

Namco Bandai has launched a Japanese teaser site for Namco Bandai x Tecmo Koei. The site is dominated by a countdown timer set to hit zero at 8 a.m. Pacific on Monday, September 5. Unfortunately, it appears gamers will have to wait until then to find out more, as the site gives no other details on the project.

The Namco Bandai x Tecmo Koei naming suggests a company-wide crossover likely pulling source material from each company's popular franchises. Namco Bandai's big franchises include Pac-Man, Tekken, Soulcalibur, Ace Combat, Ridge Racer, Klonoa, and more. For Tecmo Koei, that list is comprised of Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, Monster Rancher, Rygar, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Nobunaga's Ambition.

This would not be the first time Namco Bandai and Tecmo Koei have collaborated on a project. Since 2007, the pair have released three Dynasty Warriors Gundam titles, combining Namco Bandai's giant robot license with gameplay in the mold of Tecmo Koei's historical beat-'em-up series.

Both companies also have prior crossover experience beyond their own interactions. Namco Bandai is collaborating with Capcom on the aforementioned Street Fighter x Tekken, and working on its own counterpart in Tekken x Street Fighter. In 2005, a pre-merger Namco released the role-playing game Namco x Capcom featuring an extensive roster of both companies' characters. The publisher has also worked crossover characters like Spawn, Link, Darth Vader, and Yoda into its Soulcalibur series.

As for Tecmo Koei, it has also adapted its Dynasty Warriors series for Fist of the North Star. It is also readying another crossover created by the merger of Tecmo and Koei, as the upcoming Champion Jockey represents the combination of the two publishers' own horce racing sims, Gallop Racer and G1 Jockey.

Gears of War 3 $30 season pass to include first four DLC packs
Aug 29th 2011, 15:38

Gears of War 3 may have gone gold last week, but the game is far from finished. Epic Games and Microsoft today detailed downloadable content plans that will keep the development cogs turning for some time.

The third-person shooter will receive at least four expansions in the next year, with the first arriving in November. If purchased separately, those packs will cost players 3,600 Microsoft points ($45). However, starting on the game's September 20 launch, players can enlist for the long haul, purchasing a "Season Pass" to preorder all four packs at the discounted price of 2,400 Microsoft points ($30). In addition to the DLC add-ons, Season Pass holders will receive an exclusive "liquid metal weapon set."

Originally pegged to debut in April, Gears of War 3 begins with the last human city having been obliterated. The game follows series hero Marcus Fenix as he attempts to protect the remaining humans from the Locust horde as well as from the newer, deadlier foe, the mutating Lambent.

Gears of War 3 will be available in three versions this September: standard ($60), Limited ($80), and Epic ($150). The centerpiece of this year's $150 Gears of War 3 Epic Edition will be a limited-run Marcus Fenix statue. Between the three versions, Gears of War 3 has drawn more than 1.3 million preorders to date.

Gearbox talks Borderlands 2, Aliens: Colonial Marines
Aug 29th 2011, 02:16

PAX Prime 2011: Pitchford promises return to realistic Brothers in Arms, more Duke Nukem; Aliens Infestation due Oct. 11; Borderlands B Test hits Sept. 9.

Who was there: On hand at Gearbox Software's PAX Prime 2011 panel were president and CEO Randy Pitchford, creative director Mikey Neumann, business development head David Eddings, Aliens: Colonial Marines producer Brian Burleson, art director Jeremy Cook, content designer Scott Kester, and writer Anthony Burch.

What they talked about: Gearbox Software stole last year's Penny Arcade Expo, as it used the venue to announce its acquisition of Duke Nukem Forever and the rest of 3D Realms' iconic guns-and-girls intellectual property. And though the developer had decidedly less to talk about at this year's show, the Gearbox panel closing out PAX remained one of the most popular.

Pitchford began the session by announcing a release date for Aliens Infestation, which is in development for the Nintendo DS at WayForward. The game will arrive in Europe on September 30, with the North American roll out following on October 11.

Then, as has become Pitchford's wont at PAX, the Gearbox CEO briefly addressed a number of other projects in development at the studio. Beginning with Aliens: Colonial Marines, Pitchford said that the goal of the game is to make the sequel to Aliens that everyone wanted to see, with bigger battles between the Colonials and the Aliens.

Next up was Brothers in Arms. Having announced the comical, Inglorious Basterds-esque Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Pitchford said that the team remains committed to the more realistic travails of Sgt. Baker and his company. Stopping short of announcing a new game, Pitchford said, "We're going to do more of that. Absolutely, that's happening."

He went on to note that, in working with publisher Ubisoft, Gearbox has begun to approach the Brothers in Arms franchise as a brand that can have more than one thread. As such, it can accommodate both Furious 4 and games that resemble more traditional Brothers in Arms games, like Hell's Highway or Road to Hill 30.

After a number of self-deprecating remarks concerning recent flaps with the press as well as the somewhat-south-of-tepid critical response for Duke Nukem Forever, Pitchford reaffirmed that downloadable content is en route for that game. He also said that "soon we'll talk about" a Gearbox-developed installment in the Duke Nukem franchise.

He then moved on to Borderlands, announcing Borderlands B Test will be available through Steam on September 9. Described as a developer version of the original Borderlands, B Test is an update to all copies of the game, and it will be used as a testing ground for the studio's work on Borderlands 2.

Pitchford said that B Test will let the team closely monitor how gamers are playing the original Borderlands, as it gathers information on, for example, where people are getting stuck at or which guns aren't getting much use. It will also introduce Steam Cloud functionality into the game, allowing all characters to be saved to Valve's servers.

The conversation then shifted to Borderlands 2, with the first topic being, naturally, guns. Borderlands 2 will have an even greater amount of itemization than the first game. New to the franchise will be scopes, which will apparently offer more than just a close-up look at the battlefield. One example of these scopes was a beer bottle tied to a rifle. Players will also be able to dual-wield any weapon in the game.

Gearbox went on to note that the original game's cast of characters won't be playable in Borderlands 2. Though the studio hasn't announced the complete playable-character line-up, it has announced Salvatore the Gunzerker, which is a variant of the first game's Berserker class. The team also teased Maya, who is described as a Siren with powers different than those of the Siren in the original game.

Borderlands 2's story remains largely under wraps, but Gearbox did provide a brief overview. The primary antagonist will be Handsome Jack, who believes he is the hero and the player characters are the villains.

In a surprise, Oprah-like gesture, Pitchford and company then handed out vouchers for a free copy of Borderlands 2, which is expected to arrive between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. In the process, he asked the some 1,000 panel attendees to purchase "the inevitable Borderlands 2 downloadable content" as recompense for 2K Games' generosity.

The Gearbox teamed offered a handful of other tidbits on Borderlands 2 during the Q&A portion of the panel. The team confirmed that Borderlands 2 will have new types of equipment. As one example, elemental artifacts will provide a variety of different character-enhancing bonuses, such as improved vehicle speed.

Gearbox also confirmed that Borderlands 2 will have online and local mutliplayer split-screen functionality. Pitchford also noted that Borderlands 2 will not require a persistent online connection, though he did say that being online will offer advantages such as Steam Cloud saves. The team also said that players will be able to transfer items between characters.

Quote: "…inevitable Borderlands 2 downloadable content."--Randy Pitchford, who was promptly mocked by the team for his inability to keep a secret.

Takeaway: Gearbox clearly has a great deal of respect and affection for its fans. The studio remains at work on all of its core franchises, including Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem, and of course, Borderlands.

Asia Shippin' Out August 28-September 3: Bodycount
Aug 29th 2011, 05:19

Just before Sony unleashes their barrage of year-end heavy hitters starting with Resistance 3, gamers will get to check out a bevy of new releases for the week of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Shooter fans can try out the new Codemasters release Bodycount that will be out this Tuesday. Developed by the Guildford Studio, the FPS features a cover-lean mechanic and arcade-style shooting inspired from the likes of Serious Sam and Sega's The Club. Players control an ex-army soldier who works in a private military group called The Network and goes around solving the fictional world's conflicts using his lethal expertise. The FPS will be out this Tuesday.

Next up is the expansion for The Sims Medieval called Pirates and Nobles. In addition to the obvious job additions stated on the title, the game also brings in new quests and objects for players to decorate their custom kingdom with. The expansion also offers a treasure-hunting quest where players use different types of shovels to randomly dig at spots for valuable artifacts that can improve a Sim's stats. The expansion will be out tomorrow.

RPG fans with PSPs can finally gander at the English version of ClaDun x2 that will be downloadable on the PlayStation Network store. The sequel adds in new features like a weapon and background music creator, as well as five new classes that include the magic-wielding saint and the long-ranged ranger. Gamers can expect to head into retro dungeon-crawling territory this Tuesday.

Last but not least, gamers can check out the new Deathspank sequel called The Baconing, downloadable for the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and Mac. After the events of Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue, the hero Deathspank decided to wear all the thongs of power at one go, resulting in the accidental summoning of the evil incarnation known as the AntiSpank. He now has to enter the Fires of Bacon and destroy five of the thongs to preserve the world's balance. Much like the previous titles, this action RPG features pop-up book style aesthetics set in a sci-fi world, over a 100 quests, and local co-op options.

The Baconing is up for download this Tuesday from the PlayStation Network store and Wednesday for the Xbox Live Arcade store. PC and Mac gamers can download the action RPG from the Steam online store and the Mac Apple store respectively this Wednesday.

PC | PAX 2011: Torchlight II Embermage Abilities Preview
Aug 28th 2011, 15:36

Fire, ice, lightning--anything is possible when we get our hands on Torchlight II's new class, the Embermage.

Penny Arcade Expo East is nice and all, but it can't hold and candle to the real deal. PAX prime is in full swing here in Seattle, Washington and we've been braving the crowds and hunting down games all across the show floor. One of those games is Torchlight II, the action RPG from developer Runic Games, which just announced a new character class: the Embermage. After chatting with Runic Games' CEO Max Schaefer we got spend a little hands-on time with this hot-headed sorcerer and see some of his (or her) spells in action.

Please note that, since the game is still in development, these names are subject to change (without notice).

Runic Games' CEO Max Schaefer tells us about Torchlight II's latest character class.

Prismatic Bolt: Our go-to spell, it released a handful of energy bolts that would split up and seek out as many enemies as possible. And while it wasn't the flashiest of spells, it dealt solid damage, worked well against single or multiple targets, and had the chance to induce numerous status effects.

Frost Wave: Sent out a wave of ice shards that struck multiple enemies in a line. This was a great spell for battling foes in narrow spaces that got even better when we realized the frost wave could ricochet off walls. This let us sacrifice reach for extra damage by having the wave overlap itself in a small area.

Shocking Burst: By holding down the corresponding key this spell discharged a continuous blast of electrical energy in a small cone in front of us. It also got the least amount of use since it required us to get in melee range to be effective, plus the damage output wasn't enough to counteract having a swam of foes grouping up on us.

Blazing Pillar: Our panic button, this spell unleashed four pillars of flame that would seek out and damage nearby enemies for a few seconds. This high-damage spell made an excellent crowd control tool, as well as looked very intimidating.

Frost Phase: An excellent utility spell, it let us teleport to our cursor nearly anywhere on the screen. The only limitation was moving up to higher cliffs and platforms; moving down worked every time. Nearby enemies were also damaged upon our arrival. Whether we were popping into a fight, or frantically running to safety, this spell got plenty of use.

Lightning Storm: This one was pretty straightforward, dealing a good amount of burst damage over a wide area around the caster.

Infernal Collapse: This spell conjured a ball of energy that would explode after roughly half a second on the spot where our cursor was located. Its ranged stretched all across the screen, and the blast caused a good amount of knock back. It was also a great way to attack enemies on staircases or other inclines were other spells couldn't reach.

Magma Spear: It fired off a rapid succession of fireballs and was great for providing suppressing fire (get it?) for our allies. The spell had a low mana cost and the fireballs themselves had the chance to ignite foes on impact.

Just like any good spell caster, the Embermage had a lot of tricks up his sleeve. We also took a peek at the class' three skill trees--inferno, frost, and storm--and can safely say that there are plenty more spells that we didn't get to sample. Hopefully, this means a melee-focused battle mage build isn't out of the question. And while Runic hasn't nailed down a release date yet, we'll be sure to keep you updated on Torchlight II.
