Netflix adds games to DVD-by-mail service
Sep 19th 2011, 12:28

Netflix spins off its streaming service, renames its DVD-by-mail service Qwikster, adds video games upgrade option.

Netflix has announced plans to split its DVD-by-mail and internet media streaming services, spinning off its disc-based business as a standalone service named Qwikster. The company also announced it will add video games to its DVD service for the first time, launching Qwikster with a video games upgrade option that will let customers borrow PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii games.

In a welcome video, Qwikster's new chief executive Andy Reditch explains: "We're going to have games available as an additional charge, just like our Blu-ray [upgrade option]." There's no word on exact pricing yet, but in a post on the company blog, Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings also compares the game upgrade option to the service's existing Blu-ray upgrade option, suggesting it will cost a few extra dollars a month.

"Members have been asking for video games for many years, and now that DVD-by-mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done," writes Hastings. The Qwikster.com website will be launched in a few weeks, he says, and will be a renamed version of the Netflix DVD website, but with the addition of games; otherwise, the service will remain the same. "There are no pricing changes… You won’t have to do anything special if you subscribe to our DVD-by-mail service," says the blog post. The addition of games to Qwikster's mail-order offering puts it in competition with Blockbuster's similar movies-and-games subscription service and game rental service GameFly.

The separation of Netflix's online and offline divisions comes not long after a significant and unpopular price hike; in July, the film upped the cost of its unlimited streaming and DVD-by-mail package from $10 to $16 a month and created an $8 DVD-only option. In the same blog post in which he announces Qwikster, Hastings apologises for poor communication over that price bump, and says he regrets not giving "a full justification to our members of why we are separating DVD and streaming, and charging for both."

Hastings writes that by splitting the business in two "we will be better at streaming, and we will be better at DVD by mail". By keeping the original company name for the online service, though, the company makes clear it sees its future in streaming. Qwikster, even with the addition of games, isn't talked up for its longevity: "DVD by mail may not last forever," writes Hastings, "but we want it to last as long as possible."

Shippin' Out Sept. 18-24: Gears of War 3
Sep 18th 2011, 19:37

Gears of War 3 marks the end of Epic Games' current story arc starring Marcus Fenix and his merry band of cogs, and early reviews indicate the trilogy is going out with a bang. However, Epic's sci-fi shooter isn't marching to the front lines alone, as the third week of September also marks the arrival of two DS exclusives from Nintendo as well as a stockpile of downloadable fair.

As for Gears of War 3, the game begins with the last human city having been obliterated and series hero Marcus Fenix trying to protect the remaining humans from the Locust horde, as well as from the newer, deadlier foe, the mutating Lambent. The game is available in a standard ($60), Limited ($80), and Epic ($150) edition, and a $30 season pass for four upcoming add-on packs is also available.

On to Nintendo's platforms, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 plays out much like other games in the Square Enix-owned franchise, where turn-based battles offer players the option to fight or flee. More than 300 different monsters are available in Joker 2, though about 50 can be gained only through the correct merging of two other species.

The turn-based role-playing game will be accompanied by Kirby: Mass Attack. Biilled as a side-scrolling real-time strategy game, Kirby: Mass Attack challenges players with guiding an amassed army of Kirbys to safety. Gamers can complement their purchase of the pink puffball's latest outing by picking up a new $170 metallic rose DSi XL, which hits store shelves on Sunday.

Switching to the downloadable sector, Bethesda Softworks will be releasing Lonesome Road as a free add-on for Fallout: New Vegas. The week also sees the release of the PlayStation 3 and PC version of the Call of Duty: Black Ops' Rezurrection map pack, which is already available for the Xbox 360 edition of the game.

Also this week, EA will be releasing Burnout Crash through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. A top-down take on the Burnout series' signature crash mode, the game sports three modes across six locations and boasts 18 crash junctions. Additionally, Burnout Crash supports the Autolog feature, an online social infrastructure that was first introduced in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and lets players measure their performance against their friends.

Capcom has a pair of Resident Evil HD remakes en route for XBLA and the PSN this month, the first of which debuts this week. Resident Evil 4 HD signifies the first time the critically acclaimed installment in Capcom's long-running survival horror series releases for Microsoft's and Sony's high-def platforms.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

More Devil's Third coming early 2012
Sep 18th 2011, 01:06

Tomonobu Itagaki tells Japanese press that the game is 20 to 30 percent complete; more new content to be shown in early 2012.

TOKYO--Early last year Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki revealed he would be taking up a chief technical officer role at Valhalla Game Studios, following the settlement of a long-standing lawsuit with former employer Tecmo.

The former Tecmo developer then revealed that his first project with Valhalla will be a third-person shooter for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 called Devil's Third, an announcement made during last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Since the announcement of the title in June 2010, Itagaki has kept relatively quiet on the project. Now, it seems he is finally ready to share more details.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, and as translated by Japanese gaming news site Andria Sang, Itagaki revealed the reason why the game is missing from this year's Tokyo Game Show is due to a PR strategy surrounding the release schedule for the game.

However, Itagaki assured Famitsu readers that development on Devil's Third is progressing well, saying the game has progressed to the 20 to 30 percent completion state, and has become even more high tempo. According to Itagaki, the game's player count has increased since it was last shown at E3 2101 in the hope to reach 32 players.

Itagaki also revealed that he will be showing off a completely new level of Devil's Third sometime in early 2012.

'I still want to make ZOE sequel' - Kojima
Sep 17th 2011, 06:38

Metal Gear creator re-iterates his desire to make a Zone of the Enders sequel during this year's Tokyo Game Show.

TOKYO--Back in October 2009, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima announced his intention to begin work on a new installment in dormant Zone of the Enders mech-combat franchise. His enthusiasm for the project evident, Kojima went as far as to promise that a sequel would get made, despite leaving the question of when unanswered.

Two years on, it seems Kojima has not forgotten his promise. Speaking at the this year's Tokyo Game Show, Kojima reiterated his intention to make a ZOE sequel during the live stage show for the recently-announced Zone of the Enders HD remake. As translated by Japanese gaming news site Andria Sang, Kojima announced that a ZOE sequel was in development at one stage before stating his surprise at seeing so many people turn out to hear about the ZOE HD re-make. This latter point impressed him so much that he announced he would return to his office to speak to his staff about re-starting work on the ZOE sequel.

During the stage show Kojima also revealed the HD remake of the PlayStation 2 games will include three to four minutes of entirely new animation.

The last title in the franchise was Zone of the Enders 2, which was released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2 and received a strong critical reception. Kojima has previously stated his disappointment with the title's lackluster sales, saying setbacks in the game's release schedule prevented it from hitting sales targets.

PlayStation 3 | TGS 2011: Persona 4: Ultimate in Mayokana Arena Hands-On Preview
Sep 17th 2011, 08:21

We step into the "TV World" of the RPG and clash against old friends in Arc System Works' latest fighter.

Keeping an existing brand fresh without reverting to its standard genre is no small feat: you need to make sure that the genre switch makes a lick of sense. For the Final Fantasy series, having its main heroes and villains clashing against each other in high-flying one-on-one fighting seems logical. Atlus and Arc System Works are also taking that turn with the Shin Megami Tensei Persona spin-off, entitled Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayokana Arena. The results seem astounding based on our recent playthrough of the title's debut in Tokyo Game Show 2011.

The game's story is set two months after the events of Persona 4. Teddy, one of the party members of the game, is promoting a fighting show called the P-1 Grand Prix and somehow goaded the main cast to go into "TV World" to find out what really is going on. If you've played titles like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, you'll feel right at home with Persona 4: UMA. Characters can dash, air dash, and double-jump all over the screen to maneuver the battlefield. Combos are chained easily just like Arc System Works' past titles. And yes, the 2D graphics, backgrounds and animations are crisp and pretty to look at.

Attacks are mapped onto four buttons: A and C are your punch and kick buttons, while B and D are your light and heavy Persona attacks, which are moves where a character's guardian angel of sorts show up to land a damaging blow in the fighter's stead. Pressing A and B together unleashes an auto-combo chain for each character. Pressing A and C makes your character roll away, while pressing B and D does an emergency evade called R Action that makes you do an invincible side-step dodge at the cost of a sliver of your life.

Holding down on the joystick while pressing A and C together makes you pull off a short hop just like a King of Fighter's short jump. This not only dodges low attacks, but sets you up with any move since it's meant to give you a frame advantage. In true Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fashion, pressing A, C, and D makes you do a guard burst to break out of a combo or relentless assault at the cost of a Burst gauge. You can only do this once, so spamming this move is not an option, which also means the tactic of Burst-baiting still comes into play here.

From what we had gathered from the long lines and endless play sessions on all four cabinets at Arc System Works' booth, the main character of Persona 4 (now Yu Narukami instead of his past default manga name Souji Seta) is the popular choice among fighters. He has a beginner-friendly moveset (projectiles and fast uppercuts) thanks to his fighting style being a hybrid of Guilty Gear's Ky Kiske if he had a long-reaching stand ala JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

This isn't to say that the rest of the cast are outshined by him; Yosuke Hanamura is a fast character with dive attacks, knife projectiles for short-term zoning, and a Persona with a delayed gas attack that can stun opponents temporarily. Yukiko Amagi can control space with her feather-armed Konohana Sakuya Persona and fan projectiles.

Chie Sakamoto also hits fast like Yosuke but doesn't have the range he possesses, while Kanji hits hard with his long-reaching electric attack coming out of his Persona while also surprising enemies with a super move grab. Aigis from Persona 3 is also in the game, but she isn't playable in this build. We suspect that she may be a zoning-heavy character as she has displayed attacks using her rocket fists and miniguns in her RPG appearance.

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena will be out in Japan arcades on spring 2012. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be out on summer 2012.
