Shippin' Out Dec. 11-17: Gears of War 3 and Battlefield 3 DLC Dec 12th 2011, 16:52 Downloadable add-ons for some of the year's biggest titles takes center stage as retail release slate thins out. The name of the column is "Shippin' Out," but there's very little actually shipping this week, as most of the notable new offerings are limited to downloadable storefronts. With no major new retail releases for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 until the new year, Nintendo snags the biggest retail release of the week with Fortune Street for Wii. Marcus tries to remember if RAAM seeing his shadow means three more weeks of winter. Fortune Street for Wii lets players control familiar characters from the Nintendo and Dragon Quest universes in a board game that challenges them to play the real estate and stock markets wisely to win. It also marks Nintendo mascot Mario's fourth new game appearance in the last month, following up on Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. On the downloadable front, Battlefield 3's Back to Karkand update finishes its release rounds this week, arriving for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. The add-on features four classic Battlefield maps, as well as a new mode called Conquest Assault. Another new addition is the Assignments system that provides a new way to unlock weapons. Back to Karkand will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points), and is free for those who picked up the Limited Edition of Battlefield 3. Back to Karkand isn't the only noteworthy new add-on this week, as Gears of War 3: RAAM's Shadow will be the first piece of story-based single-player DLC to hit Epic Games' third-person shooter. This add-on places players in the boots of Zeta Squad as it tries to evacuate the human settlement of Ilima City in advance of a Locust Kryll storm. RAAM's Shadow will cost $15 (1,200 Microsoft points), and will be available free to Season Pass holders. Finally, the Marvel Pinball: Vengeance and Virtue pack is set to introduce four new tables to the comic-themed pinball title on the PS3, or Pinball FX2 on the Xbox 360. The new tables are based on Thor, Moon Knight, the X-Men, and Ghost Rider, and will be available as a $10 (800 Microsoft points). For further details, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 studio facing uncertain future Dec 12th 2011, 16:33 Sequel's fate in doubt as GSC Gameworld responds to reports of shuttering, saying, "We will do our best to continue." The future looks a little bleak for GSC Gameworld, the Ukranian developer behind the PC postapocalyptic action series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. On Friday, the Russian-language site UkraNews ran a news story reporting that GSC founder and CEO Sergei Grigorovich had decided to close the studio for personal reasons. After developing S.T.A.L.K.E.R., GSC is well acquainted with bleakness. That report was later denied on the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Twitter page, but the denial post itself was later taken down. Today, the official account has finally been updated again with an official statement, saying simply, "We will do our best to continue. However, at this moment, nothing is certain." The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are centered around Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the original game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters. To date, GSC Gameworld has released two follow-ups to the original game: Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat. A full sequel, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, was announced last year with a 2012 release window attached. Modern Warfare 3 tops $1 billion in 16 days Dec 12th 2011, 15:48 Activision's latest Call of Duty breaks Avatar's record, reaching massive revenue milestone 24 hours faster than James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster film. If there's one thing Activision wants people to know, it's that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been hugely successful. The publisher released press releases touting the game as the biggest launch in entertainment history after a single day on shelves, and then again after five days. Today, Activision echoed the sentiment once more, saying that Modern Warfare 3 reached $1 billion faster than any other entertainment property, needing just 16 days on sale. Modern Warfare 3 has toppled Avatar, so what's left to take aim at? The publisher said the fastest-to-$1-billion title was previously held by James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. That film reached the milestone on its 17th day of release. Beyond the fastest-selling claim, Activision also said the Call of Duty community has swollen to 30 million gamers, and pointed out that number is larger than the combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Madrid. The newly launched Call of Duty Elite service is not quite so sizable, with a total membership of 6 million players, of which 1 million are paying subscribers. Activision said its shooter franchise is "now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release." With huge supply chains and components made by multiple manufacturers, modern gadgets are difficult devices for companies to keep under wraps before launch. Apple's forthcoming tablet refresh is not immune to this, and the latest rumblings from manufacturer sources suggest the next iPad is just around the corner. Maybe the third time will be the charm. Like, even more of a charm. The charmest? Digitimes reports that iPad 2 manufacturing is slated to be reduced by about two-thirds starting in the first quarter of 2012 as iPad 3 manufacturing ramps up for a March or April launch. The outlet cites supply chain sources as saying shipment numbers for iPad 2 will decline from 14-15 million units in the current quarter to 4-5 million in the first quarter of 2012. The next iPad iteration is rumored to have a 2048x1536 resolution screen, effectively quadrupling the pixels in the iPad 2. As reported by GameSpot sister site CNET, other rumored features include an A6 processor, Siri integration, a slightly thicker device, and even a stereoscopic 3D screen.
