GTAIII, Vice City rated for PlayStation 3
Jan 23rd 2012, 21:59

Entertainment Software Ratings Board listings indicate PlayStation 2 games rereleasing for the PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network.

While Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto V might have fans focused on the future of the franchise, the next move for the series will have them looking to the past, according to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board.

The ESRB recently published ratings for PlayStation 2 titles Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City for release on the PlayStation 3. The games were not rated for additional platforms.

In October, Sony announced its Only on PSN program, through which PS2 titles see release via the PlayStation Network. Other recent additions to the program include ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

As of press time, Rockstar had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

PS3 hack opens up console library on PS Vita
Jan 23rd 2012, 19:56

Online video exhibits way in which to play ostensibly entire PS3 library on Sony's soon-to-be-released new portable.

When the PlayStation Vita hits store shelves in the West next month, gamers may have an even bigger selection of games to play than Sony intended. Today, videos have surfaced online showing a way in which PS Vita owners can use their PlayStation 3's Remote Play functionality to stream ostensibly any game onto their portable device.

As reported by Eurogamer, the feat is performed by way of a hack to the PlayStation 3's firmware. Users must jailbreak their PS3s and then install firmware v3.55. In this version of the PS3's operating system, the PS Vita is regarded as a mobile phone. A full explanation of the workaround can be found in the Spanish-language video, below.

The PS Vita's compatibility update with the PS3, better known as firmware 4.0, arrived during the first week of December. In addition to Remote Play functionality, the update allowed PS3 owners to copy content such as games and music to their PS Vitas.

Sony had not responded to a request for comment on the matter as of press time.

Visceral Games scouting multiplayer lead for 'bold new franchise'
Jan 23rd 2012, 21:23

Dead Space studio seeking multiplayer designer for new online action shooter franchise that will be "cornerstone" of an unannounced EA Games studio.

In March, a job listing at Electronic Arts' Visceral Games studio proclaimed the developer was at work on a "bold new IP." Now, it appears the mystery franchise not only remains in development, but it will also be a significant component of EA's business moving forward.

A new job listing at EA (via OXM) indicates that the publisher is looking for a lead multiplayer designer for a "bold new franchise." According to the listing, the title will be an online action shooter, and the ideal candidate will have "architectural knowledge and experience making realistic world levels."

Additionally, it appears EA has a fair amount of faith in its new franchise, as the publisher also said this series will be the "cornerstone" of a new EA Games studio. This studio was not named.

In November, the rumor mill churned out speculation that EA was cooking up various Dead Space spin-offs in an array of genres. These possibilities included Dead Space flight-combat, first-person shooter and action adventure games.

As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

PlayStation 3 | Sniper Elite V2 - I Can Wait All Day
Jan 23rd 2012, 21:00

By incorporating sandbox level designs, varied weapons, and other tricks, Rebellion looks to deliver a different action experience with Sniper Elite V2

The number of military action games based on the events of World War II has tapered away during the past several years, with the setting focusing on either current or futuristic storylines. Bucking this trend, Rebellion Games is going back to the tail end of WWII with its upcoming third-person action game. Sniper Elite V2 is the follow-up to the 2005 game Sniper Elite. The developers are hoping that the game's open-ended nature and "kill cam" camera mechanic will set it apart from other games.

See how the "kill cam" works in this trailer.

Sniper Elite V2 puts you in control of Karl Fairburne, a US sniper. He has been sent to Berlin in the midst of post-WWII conflicts between Nazi and Russian forces with the mission of trying to eliminate, capture, or rescue those involved in the famous V2 rocket program.

The story is spread across 11 missions, but how you approach each mission is where the game's open-ended nature comes into play. Like so many other action games, you can customize your arsenal to best suit your play style. Fairburne is equipped with a primary sniper rifle, a machine gun, and a sidearm, as well as a number of different supplementary items. These include explosive mines and trip mines, which can be set up in locations to serve various functions, such as defense mechanisms or traps.

Even though Fairburne is a sniper, you won't be restricted to playing as stealthy soldiers. The different weapons and items let you approach an area in various ways. With your silenced sidearm, you can slowly creep behind enemies and eliminate them. If you're the kind of person who enjoys running and gunning, then your machine gun will let you play with no regard for your safety.

Still, the primary focus is to snipe enemies and use the terrain to your advantage. Enemies will often be far away, so you can eliminate entire squads before they can react. When sniping, the game features both a heart-rate monitor and breathing bar, which factors into shooting. Holding your breath will allow for a more precise shot, but if you're being fired upon and under a lot of pressure, Fairburne's high heart rate makes shooting more difficult.

Kills with your rifle also showcase the game's kill-cam mechanic. When you pull off incredible kill shots, the game momentarily stops the action and goes into a bullet animation that slowly highlights the bullet's trek from the muzzle of your rifle to its target. Based on where the bullet goes, you are treated to an X-ray animation that points out exactly what internal damage has been done, such as shattering skulls and exploding livers. During our presentation, these animations were shown a lot, but we were promised that the frequency of these moments--which can take you out of the experience--will only happen at key moments.

Sniper Elite V2 is scheduled to hit the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 this May.

I Am Alive hits XBLA House Party March 7
Jan 23rd 2012, 18:41

Microsoft dates, prices seasonal slate of downloadable releases; Alan Wake's American Nightmare debuts February 22.

Microsoft can finally start printing up fliers, as the lineup and pricing for this year's Xbox Live Arcade House Party series of featured releases has been finalized.

Electronic Arts' Warp will kick off the festivities February 15. Priced at 800 Microsoft points ($10), the Trapdoor-developed game puts players in control of the teleporting alien Zero as it attempts to escape from an underwater laboratory.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare will follow on February 22 with a 1,200 Microsoft points ($15) asking price. In the follow-up to Remedy's 2010 horror action game, the titular author journeys to another remote town full of spooky secrets. There he faces off against a new supernatural villain, Mr. Scratch, and the two do battle using the powers of light (for Wake) and darkness (for Scratch).

THQ will mark the leap year with the release of Nexuiz on February 29. A multiplayer-only first-person shooter, the game also features dynamic mutators that can modify the game mid-match, with effects that turn the screen black and white or force players to get by with inverted controls. Nexuiz will sell for 800 Microsoft points ($10).

Ubisoft's long-awaited survival action game I Am Alive will bring the party to a close on March 7. Originally announced at E3 2008, I Am Alive tells the story of an everyman who has lost his wife and daughter during a mysterious but cataclysmic event. This man returns to his hometown, Haventon, a year later to find the city in ruins, with its inhabitants taking "necessary actions" to survive. I Am Alive will sell for 1,200 Microsoft points ($15).

Sony amends PS Vita AT&T data plan prices
Jan 23rd 2012, 17:09

Upper package increased from $25/2GB to $30/3GB of data per month; $15/250MB plan remains intact.

Two weeks ago, telecommunications giant AT&T announced data plan prices for the 3G iteration of the PlayStation Vita, saying gamers could elect to pay monthly fees of $15/250MB or $25/2GB. Now, Sony has amended the latter, giving gamers an option to pay more for additional data.

According to the landing page for the $299 3G version of the PS Vita, the new upper data plan is $30/3GB, an increase of $5 per month for an additional gigabyte of data. The $15/250MB data plan remains intact, and both options are no-contract, month-to-month offers.

AT&T is the exclusive service provider in the US for the PS Vita. Customers who buy into AT&T's service plan for the PS Vita will also have free access to more than 24,000 Wi-Fi hot spots nationwide.

The PS Vita was released in Japan in December and is due out in North America and Europe on February 22, with an Australian release following a day later. For more on Sony's latest portable gaming device, check out GameSpot's interview with Sony's John Koller, embedded below.
